WACO, Texas – Baylor acrobatics & tumbling earned two of the possible three weekly awards from the NCATA, the organization announced Wednesday.

BU had Riley Chimwala named Athlete of the Week, while Jordan Gruendler earned Specialist. This was Chimwala’s third Athlete accolade of the season and Gruendler’s second for Specialist.

Senior base Chimwala competed in 10 heats and the team event to help Baylor defeat Long Island on the road. She helped BU record nine scores of 9.50 or higher, including a perfect 10.0 in open pyramid and a 9.95 in both the five-element acro and the inversion pyramid heats. Chimwala is featured in all events except tumbling for the Bears.

Chimwala bases with two different tops in heat one of Acro with both hand-to-foot and hand-to-hand connections. In acro heat two, she works with a different top than the previous. In the team event, the senior from Plano works with two different tops for a total of four tops throughout the meet. She is featured in a hand-to-foot sequence at the beginning of the routine, where she bases four elements with a start value of 10 in this sequence – three of which no one else in the country is competing right now. In the second acro sequence, she brings two more skills with start value of a 10. She is the mid-level base in a pyramid with SV of a 10 and bases two tosses with start values of 9.9 and 10 respectively in team event as well.

Gruendler, a junior top, once again earned the award for her specialty in Pyramid. She helped the Bears score the perfect 10 in the open heat and the 9.95 in the inversion heat. In the inversion heat, she starts in a handstand atop her main base Bayley Humphrey, removes a hand, then effectively slenderizes into the “pencil” before dismounting. This pyramid has a start value of 10. In the open heat, she competes a handstand in which she crosses her ankles and dismounts. Apart from her contributions in pyramid, she also competes in compulsory pyramid, two acro heats and the team event.

Payton Washington earned honorable mention freshman of the week.

The Bears will celebrate Chimwala and six other seniors on Saturday at 5 p.m. for their Senior Night and final home meet of the season, competing against Gannon at the Ferrell Center.
