PHOENIX, Ariz. – Baylor men’s golf finished day one in a tie for 13th place at the Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Club, as play was halted due to darkness on Friday night.

Zach Heffernan continued his strong play as of late, opening with a first-round 66 en route to a 1-over 143 and a tie for 33rd. Heffernan was the only Bear to complete both rounds on day one.

The Bears are eight shots back of seventh place Oklahoma State. Arizona State leads at 23-under par, 13 shots in front of second-place Arizona.

THE RUNDOWN
Round One
Starting at No. 10, Heffernan birdied three of his first four holes to race to the top of the leaderboard at 3-under. He closed his opening nine with his first bogey of the day at No. 10. His second nine started similarly with three straight birdies at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 to reach 5-under for the day. Following back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 4 and 5, Heffernan closed with two more birdies at Nos. 7 and 9.

Luke Dossey also finished his first round in red figures with a 1-under 70. With birdies on two of his first four holes, Dossey scared the top of the leaderboard before a bogey at No. 16 dropped him back to 1-under. He made the turn at 2-under after a birdie at No. 18. The senior lost three shots with a bogey at No. 1 and a double bogey at No. 3 but responded with birdies at Nos. 7 and 9 to close out the opening round.

Davis Ovard shot a 1-over 72 in round one. The freshman bounced back from an early bogey at No. 11 with a birdie at No. 15 before making the turn at 1-over after a bogey at No. 16. Ovard opened the second nine with a birdie at No. 1 but dropped two more shots with bogeys at Nos. 3 and 8. He finished strong with a birdie at his final hole of the round at No. 9.

Johnny Keefer carded a 1-over 72 of his own. He went out in 35 with bogeys at Nos. 10 and 18 around birdies at Nos. 14 and 16. On the front nine, the senior made a couple of bogeys at Nos. 4 and 6 but closed with a birdie at No. 18.

Tyler Isenhart finished round one with a 3-over 74. The senior got off to a steady start with seven-straight pars before dropping his only shot on his outward nine with a bogey at No. 17. Three bogeys in his first four holes got his back nine off to a rocky start before adding one final birdie at No. 7.

Round Two
Heffernan opened his second round with three bogeys on the back nine at Nos. 11, 14 and 18 to make the turn at 3-over. The junior made book-end birdies at Nos. 1 and 9 with two pars and five bogeys in between to finish day one in a tie for 33rd.

Dossey finished 35 of his 36 scheduled holes on Friday, sitting in a tie for 41st when the horn sounded. He opened with a pair of early bogeys at Nos. 10 and 12 but bounced back with birdies at Nos. 15 and 17 to get back to even. A final bogey on his outward nine came at No. 18 as he made the turn at 1-over par. Two quick birdies at Nos. 1 and 2 pushed him back into red figures before a double bogey at No. 3, and bogeys at Nos. 6 and 8 dropped him back to 3-over on the round when darkness fell.

Keefer currently sits in a tie for 58th with two holes remaining in his second round. A bogey started his afternoon session at No. 10, one of three bogeys on his front side. The senior settled in on his second nine with six pars and a birdie at No. 3.

Isenhart made bogey on two of his first four holes on the back nine but scratched back a stroke with a birdie at No. 15 to make the turn at 1-over. The senior opened his second nine with five-straight pars before sandwiching a couple of bogeys at Nos. 6 and 8 around a birdie at No. 7. With one hole to play in the second round, Isenhart sits tied for 70th.

Ovard is one hole short of completing his second round and is tied with Isenhart in 70th. The Frisco, Texas, native recovered from an early bogey at No. 10 with a birdie at No. 12. A bogey at No. 13 would drop him back over par as he made the turn with a 1-over 36. A second birdie dotted his card at No. 3, but he played the next five holes at 4-over to drop back to 4-over on the round and 5-over for the day.
