Baylor MT Wraps Up First Weekend of Fall Play
Bowden wins most valuable player honors in first collegiate tournament

WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s tennis wrapped up its time across North America on Sunday, finishing competition at three separate tournaments: Battle in the Bay in San Francisco, Calif., Big 12/SEC Challenge in Stillwater, Okla., and USA Collegiate Cup in Torreon, Mexico.

Louis Bowden, Martin Breysach and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen all record their first wins as Bears, while Bowden won the Team Big 12 MVP honor in the first tournament of his collegiate career.

THE RUNDOWN

Battle in the Bay

Zsombor Velcz and Luc Koenig had a slow start in California, dropping their first doubles match and individual singles matches. Momentum picked up as Koenig made a splash in the consolation bracket after qualifying to the semifinal round.

Koenig began the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-4 conference foe, Asahi Harazaki from Oklahoma. On Saturday, Koenig came back to defeat Alex Chang from UC Berkeley, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8, before falling to Alex Petrov from Illinois in the semifinal, 6-1, 6-1.

Velcz got his consolation win from San Francisco’s Moritz Hoffmann, taking the two-set win at 7-6(3), 6-2.

Sunday featured an extra matinee with a Velcz win over OU’s Justin Schlageter, 6-4, 6-3, while Koenig dropped a match to Pacific’s Peter Alam, 5-7, 7-5, 10-8.

Big 12/SEC Challenge

The Bears, who were represented by Bowden, Brostrom Poulsen, Breysach and Marko Miladinovic, posted an impressive Saturday afternoon, sweeping on Alabama on all singles courts.

The duo of Breysach and Brostrom Poulsen tabbed their first Baylor win on Friday, defeating Alabama’s Aguiard/Foster, 7-6(5), 6-3. They dropped a 6-5, 7-6(4) decision to an A&M team on Saturday before taking a single-setter from Tennessee’s Li/Newton, 8-3.

Individually, Breysach and Brostrom Poulsen both went 1-2 in singles play. Brostrom Poulsen’s win came Saturday against Alabama’s Zach Foster, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, while Breysach defeated Matias Ponce de Leon, 6-4, 6-2.

While the pairing of Bowden and Miladinovic went winless in doubles play, both led the Bears with a 2-1 singles record on the weekend. Bowden secured his first collegiate win against Alabama’s Enzo Aguiard, 6-7(5), 5-2, retired, before Sunday morning’s finale over Texas A&M’s Giulio Perego, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. Miladinovic got his first win of the weekend over sophomore Roan Jones from Alabama, 6-3, 6-3. His time in Stillwater closed with a win over Aggie Luke Casper, 6-2, 6-4.

USA Collegiate Cup

Christopher Frantzen led the Bears with two singles wins in Mexico, taking dubs over TCU’s Julian Alonso, 7-6(4), 6-4, and ACU’s Cesar Barranquero, 6-3, 6-1.

Justin Braverman tallied a win over Horned Frog Kaj Quirigns, 7-5, 6-4, while Ethan Muza defeated Dario Kmet from ACU, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

The Braverman/Frantzen pairing also tallied a single-set win over an ACU squad of Barranquero/Kmet, 6-4.
