OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill.– Johnny Keefer, Luke Dossey and Zach Heffernan carded 1-over 71s on Friday, helping Baylor men's golf to a tie for 12th in round one at the Fighting Illini Invitational

On a day where the stroke average was a shade over 72 (72.19), the trio of Bears helped BU to a 7-over 287, keeping them in a tightly-bunched pack with six shots separating third place and 12th.

Texas holds the team lead after round one with a 4-under 276, one shot better than second-place Georgia Tech. Stanford’s Karl Vilips and Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht share the individual lead with a pair of 5-under 65s on Friday.

THE RUNDOWN
Keefer burst out of the gates with two birdies in his first three holes before his first bogey of the day came at No. 7. After making the turn at 1-under, the senior made two more bogeys at Nos. 12 and 14 to fall back over par but got back to even with a birdie at 15. A double-bogey five set him back at No. 16, before he closed strong with a birdie at No. 18 to pull into a tie for 25th.

Dossey is also in a tie for 25th after his 1-over 71. He made an early bogey at No. 3, his only blemish on the front nine. The senior made a pair of bogeys at Nos. 10 and 12 around a birdie at No. 11. One final bogey came at No. 14 before he closed strong with two birdies in his final three holes to get back to 1-over.

Heffernan made two bogeys in his first four holes, but settled in with five-straight pars to close out the front nine with a 2-over 37. The junior got a stroke back with a birdie at No. 10, only to drop two more at Nos. 12 and 14. Like his teammate Dossey, Heffernan also closed strong with two birdies in his final four holes to get back into a tie for 25th.

Trey Bosco shot a 4-over 74 on Friday to claim a tie for 57th after round one. On the heels of four straight pars to start, Bosco made a double bogey at No. 5 and followed that with a birdie at No. 8 and a bogey at No. 9, which added up to a 2-over 37. His second bogey of the day came at No. 12, but he got a stroke right back with a birdie at No. 13. Sitting at 2-over with five holes to play, Bosco made a pair of bogeys coming in at Nos. 15 and 18.

Jonas Appel made a couple of early bogeys before battling back to even with birdies at Nos. 7 and 8. A double-bogey six at No. 9 saw him make the turn at 2-over, as four more bogeys at Nos. 11, 14, 17 and 18 would put him in a tie for 71st.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   BU’s 14 birdies tied for the third-most in the field on Friday.
  *   Trey Bosco tied for the best individual par-3 scoring average (2.50).
  *   Johnny Keefer tied for the second-best par-5 scoring average (4.00).
  *   Zach Heffernan’s 71 was his lowest score since a 70 in the opening round of the Thunderbird Collegiate last season.

STAT OF THE DAY
2.90 — Baylor led the field in par-3 scoring average on Friday with a 2.90.
