FORT WORTH, Texas – Baylor baseball (16-35, 6-18) was swept by TCU (30-21, 11-10) in its series finale in Fort Worth by a final of 10-4 Sunday at Lupton Stadium.

Despite pounding out 12 hits, which included four Bears with multi-hit efforts, BU was unable to overcome TCU’s six-spot in the bottom of the first inning that proved to be the difference in the ballgame. Baylor left 14 runners on base, including 10 in the final four innings, as opposed to TCU’s nine.

Redshirt freshman OF Gavin Brzozowski and junior RHP/OF Cole Tremain each tied their season highs with three hits, while junior INF/OF Daniel Altman and sophomore C Cortlan Castle both tallied two knocks. Castle extended his on-base streak to 15 games, becoming the fourth different Bear with an on-base streak of at least 15 games this season.

Senior RHP Blake Helton gave Baylor 3.2 solid innings of relief, allowing a pair of runs while also fanning a couple of Horned Frogs. Junior righty Adam Muirhead worked two frames with a team-high three punchouts, while junior RHP Hambleton Oliver worked another scoreless outing, his ninth of the year.

THE RUNDOWN
After recording two quick outs in the bottom of the first, Baylor starter Cam Caley struggled to finish off the frame as TCU scored six runs on six hits to take an early lead. A solo home run in the bottom of the second increased the Horned Frogs’ lead to 7-0 before BU could answer back.

In the top of the fourth, Brzozowski smoked a ball off the TCU first baseman that went for a run-scoring error to get Baylor on the board. But, a wild pitch that allowed a run to score preceded another solo home run as the Frogs took a 9-1 lead in the fifth.

Brzozowski’s infield single plated a run in the top of the sixth to cut into the deficit, and BU would score the game’s next tally in the eighth as sophomore INF Hunter Teplanszky walked with the bases loaded to make it 9-3.

TCU added one in the bottom half on an RBI groundout, though Altman singled home Tremain in the top of the ninth to account for the contest’s final score.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Baylor eclipsed double figures in hits for the 21st time this season and first since pounding out a season-high 18 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on May 3.
• Sophomore C Cortlan Castle extended his on-base streak to 15 games with his 11th multi-hit game of the season.
• Junior RHP/OF Cole Tremain picked up his ninth multi-hit performance and fourth three-hit game of the year.
• Tremain also scored a season-high three runs.
• Redshirt freshman OF Gavin Brzozowski collected his eighth multi-hit effort and matched his season best with three hits.
• Brzozowski also hit his second triple of the season.
• Junior INF/OF Daniel Altman notched his second multi-hit game of 2023.
• Junior RHP Hambleton Oliver recorded his ninth scoreless relief outing of the season.
• Senior RHP Blake Helton set a season high with 3.2 innings of relief, one out shy of his career best for relief outings.
• Junior RHP Adam Muirhead went at least two innings for the third time in 2023 and struck out three batters, one shy of his career high.

STAT OF THE DAY
12 – Baylor totaled 12 hits in the contest, its 21st game in double figures.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today’s game…
“I thought Blake Helton was a real positive. He came in and gave us a chance. I thought [Adam] Muirhead threw the ball well and Ham [Oliver] came in and did a nice job. We got some hits, we put men on base, but we couldn’t get the big hit. Had the bases loaded a couple times, left two runners on a couple times, it was a frustrating day. It’s a 4-4 game other than [TCU’s six-run first].”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor (16-35) heads to Tarleton (24-24) on Tuesday, May 16, for its final road game of 2023. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from the Tarleton Baseball Complex in Stephenville.
