COLUMBIA, S.C. – Baylor men’s tennis closed the season on Friday afternoon at the Carolina Tennis Center with a 4-0 loss to No. 18 Florida State in the first round of the NCAA DI Men’s Tennis Championship.

The Bears (17-16) claimed one doubles win over Florida State (20-8) and was nearing at least one singles point, but the Seminoles cliched the match and their ticket to Round Two first.

THE RUNDOWN

The pair had some great points in their match, but Christopher Frantzen and Luc Koenig fell 6-2 at the third singles spot to Barnaby Smith and Maks Silagy for the first decision of the day.

BU responded with No. 15 Zsombor Velcz and Tadeas Paroulek winning big over 34th-ranked Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif, 6-1, to stop the Florida State pair’s six-match win streak. Shortly after, Andreja Petrovic and Loris Pourroy secured the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi.

In singles, the Bears and Seminoles traded punches and sets, but Florida State put three singles points together first.

After fighting off a second set surge from Marko Miladinović, No. 112 Youcef Rihane claimed the first singles point with a 6-2, 7-5 decision on Court Three. Moments later, Bass lost after a tiebreak to Dous-Karpenschif on Court Four.

The match was clinched with a third set push from Andreja Petrovic on five against Grassi Mazzuchi, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

With the match clinched, Courts One, Two and Six remained unfinished. At One, No. 75 Paroulek took seventh-ranked Cornut-Chauvinc to a third set and was up 1-love. Velcz was schooling FSU’s Pourroy and was nearing a match win, 6-3, 4-6, 5-1 on two. After dropping the first set at six, Koenig stormed to a 6-3 set No. 2 to force a third, where he was up 2-1.

WHAT’S NEXT

Tadeas Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz earned a spot in the NCAA Individual Championship doubles bracket and will open play in Orlando, Fla., on May 23.
