Baylor WT Bounces Back with 4-3 Win over SMU
The Bears erased a 3-1 deficit to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Baylor women’s tennis (17-13) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a thrilling 4-3 decision over SMU (16-9) on Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.

A pair of 6-3 doubles victories on courts one and three propelled the Mustangs to an early 1-0 lead.

Barañano battled for a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles to put the Bears on the board, before SMU regained its lead with a 6-2, 6-1 decision on court two.

SMU jumped ahead to a 3-1 advantage, but a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision on No. 3 by Isabella kept the Bears within reach.

Liubov Kostenko opened with a 6-3 win on No. 4 before her opponent responded with a 6-3 victory to force the fourth third set of the afternoon. Trailing in the set, Kostenko erased her deficit and knotted the score at five-all before sealing the set, 7-5, to tie the match at three.

Alina Shcherbinina allowed just one point in the final frame to #75 Hadley Doyle on court one, taking it 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 to complete the comeback win for the Bears.

“We knew it was going to be a tight match,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “SMU is a tough team that is really well coached. We knew it was going to come down to the wire, but the team persevered. We’re so proud of them and they’ve come a long way this season.”

Baylor will take on No. 2 national seed Texas A&M on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a spot in the Super Regionals.
