Baylor MT Goes 1-1 in Sunday Doubleheader

WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s tennis split its doubleheader at the Hurd Tennis Center between No. 16 Wake Forest and Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon.



Baylor (9-11) had No. 24 Zsombor Velcz and Tadeas Paroulek earn two wins in doubles, while Velcz recorded his first win in his first attempt at the No. 1 spot in his collegiate career.



THE RUNDOWN

MATCH ONE

The Demon Deacons opened the Sunday matinee match by taking the doubles point from wins at three and two. Matthew Thomson and Melios Efstathiou defeated Justin Braverman and Christopher Frantzen, 6-3, at No. 3 before a nail-biter final on Court Two, as Jurabek Karimov and Luciano Tacchi took a 7-4 breaker over Luc Koenig and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi to win the doubles point.



No. 24 Tadeas Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz earned another ranked win for the home team over No. 30 Juan Lopez de Azcona and Filippo Moroni in a tiebreak at one, 7-6(2).



Court Six was the first to finish in singles play, as Lopez de Azconoa beat freshman Koenig, 6-1, 6-3. The five spot gave Wake Forest their third overall team point, as Tacchi defeated Ethan Muza, 6-2, 6-4.



Wake Forest clinched the match after No. 122 Filippo Moroni got the 7-6(5), 6-3 advantage over Velcz.



No. 98 Paroulek forced a third set over No. 21 Efstathiou, as did Grassi Mazzuchi over No. 117 Karimon, after splitting the first two sets and Marko Miladinvoć took the first set in his match. All were left unfinished.



MATCH TWO

The Bears dominated the visiting PVAMU Panthers, sweeping the squad in just over 1 ½ hours.



Two 6-0 sweeps won the doubles point for the Bears, with Koenig and Grassi Mazzuchi on two while Braverman and Frantzen were on three. Paroulek and Velcz only allowed one game, taking a 6-1 win.



Braverman, Frantzen and Muza clinched the match for BU on Sunday night and did not allow a single game to be won by their opponents, as all three swept at 6-0, 6-0.



Grassi Mazzuchi and Miladinović put up matching 6-2, 6-1 victories on Courts Three and Two, respectively, while Velcz won 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 position.

On Sunday’s doubleheader…

“I thought we did a pretty good job overall in doubles against Wake Forest, and we had some opportunities that we just weren’t able to take advantage of. Marko [Miladinovic], Juampi [Grassi Mazzuchi], Zsombor [Velcz] and Teddy [Paroulek] did a great job of hanging in there and turning some sets and getting ahead, but in general credit to them, they did a good job and their experience showed. Going into the Prairie View A&M match, it’s always difficult coming back after a loss and continuing to play, and the guys did a good job in general of focusing and finding ways to get better. I think they pushed us and they’re working hard out there. It was good for us to have that competitiveness tonight, to come out with some positives and get another win. That’s always a good thing.”



Looking forward to SMU on Thursday

“We’ve got a couple of tough road tests coming up. SMU and Tulsa are really strong programs and have great teams this year and it’s never easy to play on the road. We’ll have to regroup and get ready for some tough ones coming up.”



WHAT’S NEXT

The Bears hit the road for back-to-back away games at SMU on Thursday and Tulsa next Wednesday.
