KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Baylor women’s basketball team begins its quest for a tournament title on Friday when it opens the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship against Iowa State at Municipal Auditorium.

TOURNEY TIME

Baylor is 48-14 all-time in the Big 12 Championship and 12-6 against its half of this year’s bracket. The Bears are 4-1 against Iowa State in the postseason tournament, and Friday’s matchup marks the first time since 2001 that the two teams are meeting in the quarterfinals. Iowa State and Baylor last met in the 2019 title game, where the Bears came out on top, 67-49.



THINGS TO WATCH

  *   Graduate Ja’Mee Asberry has played 152 games in her career and sits behind Iowa State’s Ashley Joens, who broke the Big 12 record on Saturday at 154 career games.
  *   Fifth-year Caitlin Bickle is currently shooting 50% from the floor, 40% from 3-point range and 80% at the free throw line, which are the best averages among players in the five position in the Power 5. She is on a list of just nine players that were at least six-feet tall who have shot 50/40/80 in the Big 12 since 1999-00.
  *   Rookie Darianna Littlepage-Buggs earned her eighth Big 12 Freshman of the Week award on Monday, becoming the first BU rookie in program history to earn it eight times. Additionally, she ranks second in the Big 12 all-time in Freshman of the Week honors behind Ayoka Lee (Kansas State), who earned it 12 times in 2020.
  *   The Bears are just one victory away from securing 20 wins this season. Baylor has won 20-plus games in 22-straight seasons, which is the second-longest active streak among Division I programs. UConn leads the way with 30-straight 20-plus win seasons.



SCOUTING IOWA STATE AND THE SERIES

Baylor holds the 33-10 advantage in the all-time series with Iowa State, as the two teams split during the regular season. The Bears went into Ames and picked up the 76-70 win over the then-No. 12 Cyclones on Feb. 4, before being edged 81-77 in a double-overtime thriller in Waco on Feb. 18.



The Cyclones are 19-9 on the year and closed the season with a 76-52 victory against Texas Tech.



Ashley Joens earned the league’s Player of the. Year award, while Emily Ryan, Lexi Donarski and Denae Fritz also picked up all-conference honors. Iowa State has four players averaging double figures, led by Joens’ 21.0 points per game. She’s also averaging a team-high 9.4 rebounds per contest, which is third in the league behind KU’s Taiyanna Jackson and Baylor’s Darianna Littlepage-Buggs.
