IRVING, Texas – Six Bears from five different sports were recognized with the 2023 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Award, the Big 12 Conference’s highest academic honor, the league announced on Friday.

This year’s Baylor honorees are Grayson Moore and Emily Tobin from Acrobatics & Tumbling, Christopher Frantzen from Men’s Tennis, Daisy Kaufman from Equestrian, Lauren Traywick from Soccer and Kathryn Avery from Women’s Track & Field.

Moore, a senior base from Cedar Park, Texas, has previously earned NCATA Academic Honor Roll accolades and will be graduating early with her degree in Sociology. Her freshman year, she earned Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team honors. She is a two-time national champion with the Bears.

Tobin, a senior top from Templeton, Calif., has competed in every meet for the Bears and in nearly every event for the past several years. The two-time NCATA Most Outstanding Athlete has previously been named to the NCATA Academic Honor Roll and Academic All-Big 12. She has been on three National Championship Teams with the Bears

Frantzen is a fourth-year junior from Augsburg, Germany majoring in Finance. Over his career he’s put up a 23-14 record in singles and currently stands 2-3 this season in doubles.

Kaufman, a senior from Castle Rock, Colo., is a three-year starter on the Baylor equestrian team. She was named a Second-Team All-American in Reining by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association as a sophomore in 2021 and earned spots on the NCEA All-Academic and Academic All-Big 12 First Teams in 2022. As a senior in 2023, Kaufman owns a 5-5-1 record in Reining for the eighth-ranked Bears.

Traywick, a junior from Austin, Texas, started 14 games in goal for the Bears. She totaled 1,204 minutes on the pitch and had 58 saves on the season. She recorded a career-high of nine saves against then-No. 1 North Carolina.

Avery is a senior studying Economics from Rockwall, Texas. She set personal best’s during the 2022 outdoor season in the 1,500 and 3,000-meter races of 5:03.24 and 10:51.93, respectively.

The award is in its 12th year and has recognized a total of 1,208 conference student-athletes.

Over the last seven years, Baylor has had 88 honorees.

The award is in memory of Lage, who served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. He was the chairman on three occasions (1985-86, 93-94 and 2003-04).

In order to be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honoree, which can only be recognized once, should have 100 hours of earned credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of the nomination.

The Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award recipients' names will be featured on the video board at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships, scheduled for March 8-11 at the T-Mobile Center and March 9-12 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
