No. 21 Baylor MGOLF Posts Strong Start at the Prestige

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Baylor men’s golf got off to a good start at the Prestige with a 3-under 281 on Monday, to wrap the first round in a tie for fifth.

Drew Wrightson is tied for sixth place individually after his strong play continued in round one, with a 3-under 68. Monday’s round marked his third at par or better in four rounds this spring.

The Bears are tied with Loyola Marymount and five-shots back of the leader Pepperdine, who shot an 8-under 276 on Monday.

THE RUNDOWN
Wrightson opened with bogeys on two of his first three holes, and after a birdie at No. 4, his bogey five would prove to be his final one for the day. The sophomore birdied Nos. 6, 8, 10, 16 and 18 to play his final 13 holes at 5-under par. His 68 on Monday is the lowest first round of Wrightson’s career.

Johnny Keefer finished tied for 14th Monday, two-shots back of Wrightson on the heels of a 1-under 70. The senior made a pair of birdies to open the round at Nos. 1 and 2, but after a birdie at No. 5, he dropped three strokes with a double at six and a bogey at seven to finish the front nine at even par. Keefer made a quick birdie at No. 11 to start the back nine, before his lone back-nine bogey came at No. 13. He played his final five holes under par, highlighted by a birdie at No. 15.

Zach Heffernan opened the round with bogeys on two of his first three holes at Nos. 1 and 3. The sophomore got back to even through nine with birdies at Nos. 8 and 9, before dipping into red figures with a birdie at No. 10. Heffernan’s birdie streak was interrupted by a double bogey at No. 11 and a bogey at No. 13, but he got back on track with birdies at Nos. 14 and 16 to finish tied for 14th.

Tyler Isenhart shot a 2-over 73, good enough for a tie for 44th. He opened with four-straight bogeys and recorded a fifth at No. 9, to make the turn at 5-over par. The senior immediately made a birdie to open the back nine at No. 10 and followed with an eagle at the par-4 11th. Isenhart made another birdie at 15 to get to 1-over, but finished with one last bogey at No. 17.

Trey Bosco shot a 3-over 74 in round one to finish tied for 58th. After an opening-hole bogey, Bosco made two more at Nos. 7 and 9 to make the turn at 3-over. On the heels of his fourth bogey of the day at No. 10, Bosco got a stroke back with a birdie at No. 12 before making another bogey at No. 13. The junior finished strong with a birdie at 16 to play his final five holes at 1-under par.

Over at the Prestige Individual Invitational, Luke Dossey and Jonas Appel fired a pair of even-par 72’s to tie for 19th after round one. Luke Morgan shot a 9-over 81 on Monday to finish in 48th place.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor had the second-best par-5 scoring average on Monday (4.60).
  *   The Bears had the fourth-best par-4 scoring average (4.00).
  *   BU’s 21 birdies tied for the second-most in round one.
  *   Tyler Isenhart made one of five eagles in the 120-player field on Monday.
  *   Johnny Keefer tied for the best par-4 scoring average in round one (3.73).
  *   Zach Heffernan tied for the best par-5 scoring average on Monday (4.00).

STAT OF THE DAY
Drew Wrightson’s opening-round 68 tied the lowest round of his career, matching a pair of 68s in the final two rounds of the DBU classic last spring.

The Bears will be grouped with TCU and LSU in round two, beginning at 1:00 p.m. CT with Zach Heffernan.
