PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – Baylor women’s golf freshman Silje Ohma fired an opening-round 66 on Sunday to hold the individual lead and help the Bears to the top of the leaderboard at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge.

The Bears finished the day as the only team under par after a 2-under 282, four shots clear of Ohio State and No. 1 Stanford, who are tied for second after a pair of 2-over 286s.

Sera Hasegawa fired an even-par 71, her seventh-straight round at par or better and her ninth in 10 rounds as a Bear.

THE RUNDOWN
Opening on the more challenging nine holes, Ohma started with four-straight pars followed by three-straight birdies to reach three under through seven holes before her only bogey of the day came at No. 8. Turning to the front side, the freshman made a birdie at No. 2 and two more to close out the round at Nos. 8 and 9.

Coming off a minor injury to start the spring, Hasegawa picked up where she left off in the fall with a birdie at No. 10 to start the day. After giving a stroke back with a bogey at No. 12, the sophomore made birdies at Nos. 15 and 16, before those were negated by a double bogey at 17. She made another double bogey at No. 1 and a bogey at two, but settled in with four-straight pars and then closed out the round with birdies at Nos. 7, 8 and 9 to finish tied for 13th.

Hannah Karg shot a 1-over 72 to finish tied for 17th after one round. The senior went out with a 2-under 34 thanks to birdies at Nos. 12 and 16. Turning to the front nine, Karg made bogeys at Nos. 2 and 3 before getting back into red figures with a birdie at No. 6. Bogeys at Nos. 8 and 9 saw her finish off her day at 1-over.

Fresh off her career-first win, Rosie Belsham shot a 2-over 73 to finish in a tie for 27th after round one. Belsham made birdies at Nos. 12 and 14 around a bogey at No. 13 to make the turn at 1-under 35. Belsham made birdies at Nos. 2, 3 and 5, followed by four-straight pars to close out her round.

Anika Veintemilla shot a 10-over 81 to finish round one in a tie for 79th. She shot a 7-over 43 on her opening nine with double bogeys at Nos. 12 and 17, along with bogeys at Nos. 10, 13 and 14. Improving by five strokes on her second nine, the senior had bogeys at Nos. 3, 6 and 8 to finish round one.

QUOTABLE:
Head coach Jay Goble – “We played in some challenging conditions, to say the least. It was probably only 52 degrees, with about a 20-mile-per-hour wind in the afternoon, so for us to finish the way we did and for Silje to finish the way she did was off the charts. We played the second nine first, which is the harder nine, so the way we were able to grind it out there to the end was impressive.”

WHAT’S NEXT
The Bears will be grouped with No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 San Jose State and No. 35 Ohio State in Monday’s second round. Veintemilla will lead things off at 12:12 p.m. CT, followed by Belsham at 12:24 p.m. Karg will tee off at 12:36, just ahead of Hasegawa at 12:48 p.m. Ohma will be last off at 1:00 p.m.
