LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Baylor softball took down Southern Utah, 5-2 and UNLV, 9-1 Saturday, at day two of the UNLV Rebel Kickoff in Las Vegas, Nev.

THE RUNDOWN

Game 1: Baylor 5, Southern Utah 2

After allowing one base runner in the first, Baylor found it’s rhythm and sat the Thunderbirds down in order in the second inning.

The Bears went scoreless in the first but got on the board early in the second. A leadoff single from Shaylon Govan and a sac bunt from Ana Watson put a runner on second for Aliyah Binford who singled up the middle to bring home the Bears first run.

Southern Utah answered with two runs of their own, after a two-out double down the left field line gave the Thunderbirds the 2-1 lead.

Baylor fought back and regained the lead in the third, after a leadoff double from Amber Toven. McKenzie Wilson and Emily Hott drew walks to load the bases for Govan, who had a bases-clearing double and gave the Bears the 4-2 lead.

Ava Knoll made her debut as a Bear and took over in the circle in the fourth inning and recorded the putout after the ball came right back at her. She then sat the Thunderbirds down in order in the fifth.

The Bears tacked on another run in the fifth inning, after Govan who was 3-for-3 in the game recorded her second double and came around to score later in the inning.

Knoll picked up three more strikeouts on the way to the Bears 5-2 win over Southern Utah, and held the Thunderbirds scoreless through four frames.

Game 2: Baylor 9, UNLV 1

The Bears defeated tournament host UNLV in a five-inning run-rule, after a five-spot in the top of the fifth.

Baylor was able to get on the board early, as Amber Toven reached on an error by UNLV before Emily Hott doubled to centerfield to bring her home. Aliyah Binford, who went 3-for-4 in the game, recorded an infield single that scored Hott from third.

Starting pitcher, RyLee Crandall shut two innings down with back-to-back strikeouts to keep the Rebels off the board. She also worked through a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third, as Binford tagged the runner out at third to record the last out.

The Bears threatened again in the second and third innings but no runs came across.

Doubling their lead, Baylor tacked on two runs in the fourth, in part due to singles from Sydney Collazos and McKenzie Wilson who put two on for Toven who doubled to left center.

UNLV scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, a solo home run.

Binford led off the fifth inning with an infield single and stole second before Watson singled scoring her. Watson advanced to third on a single from Presleigh Pilon, before a sacrifice bunt from Collazos scored a run. Adding another run on a single from Taylor Strain the Bears went up, 7-1, before two more walks were issued to load the bases. Govan then hit a two RBI single up the middle to put the Bears up eight runs.

Coming in to secure the run-rule, Binford sat the Rebels down in order and picked up two strikeouts to close out the fifth inning.

QUOTABLE – Head Coach Glenn Moore

“Another solid day from our offense. Consecutive quality plate appearances every inning puts a lot of pressure on the pitching, eventually they will break. Really happy with Rylee Crandall’s composure in the last game, she dug a few holes but never caved.”

WHAT’S NEXT

The Bears are back in action tomorrow to close out the Rebel Kickoff, facing No. 7 Arkansas at 11 a.m. CT.
