No. 13 Baylor WGOLF Tied for Fourth After Day One of the Big 12 Championship
All five Bears shot identical 2-over 74s in the first round on Friday

DALLAS, Texas – Baylor women’s golf finished day one in a tie for fourth place on a windy Friday at Dallas Athletic Club in the Big 12 Championship.

All five BU players shot rounds of 2-over 74 to open the championship in a tie for 11th place. Pimkwan Chookaew of Iowa State holds the overnight lead after a 5-under 67, one of just three players to break par on Friday.

BU’s 8-over 296 is five shots back of Texas Tech who set the pace with a 3-over 291 in round one.

THE RUNDOWN
Sera Hasegawa opened with four-straight pars, but fell victim to the difficult par-4 5th, which yielded her first bogey of the day. She closed the front nine strong with a birdie at No. 9 for an even-par 36. She dropped a shot at No. 11, but got it right back with a birdie at No. 12. The sophomore fell back over par with bogeys at Nos. 16 and 18 to finish in a tie for 11th.

Rosie Belsham started steady with six-straight pars, but ran into a bit of trouble with a double bogey at the par-3 7th, to card a 2-over 38 on the front nine. After a bogey at No. 11, The junior made back-to-back birdies at Nos. 12 and 13, but gave them back with a double at No. 16. Belsham finished strong with a birdie putt at No. 18 to get back to a tie for 11th.

Silje Ohma started strong with a birdie at No. 1, but made a pair of bogeys to close out the front nine at Nos. 5 and 9 for a 1-over 37 outward nine. After a bogey at No. 11, Ohma bounced back with a birdie at No. 12 before a slight stumble on the home hole left her at 2-over on the round.

Britta Snyder also opened with a birdie at No. 1 but carded a couple of bogeys on the way out for a 1-over 37 on the front nine. The junior made a couple more bogeys at Nos. 11 and 14, but finished strong by rolling in a birdie putt at No. 18 to climb into that tie for 11th.

Hannah made a couple of early bogeys, but bounced back with consecutive birdies including one at the difficult par-4 5th, which yielded just six birdies all day. A bogey, birdie and double bogey finished off an eventful front nine for the senior with a 2-over 38. Karg started with three-straight pars on the back nine before her fourth birdie of the day fell at No. 13. She finished with a bogey at No. 18 to get into a tie with her teammates.

HIGHLIGHTS

•      Baylor was the only team to have all five players finish in the top 25.

•      BU finished with the second-best par-4 scoring average (4.12).

•      The Bears recorded the third best par-3 scoring average (3.35).


QUOTABLE:
Head coach Jay Goble: “I think that this is a deceptively hard place and when you throw a 15 to 20 mile an hour north wind in, it makes the golf course challenging. If you look at our scores with five players all shooting the same thing, it just kind of felt like we couldn't get out of first gear today, but that's okay. I think I'm going to look at that as a positive, in the fact that we didn't play our best golf today and we're not in a terrible position moving forward. You give us three rounds of golf and some time, the cream rises to the top and we have one of the best teams out here for sure.”
