Baylor MGOLF finishes Tied for Ninth at the Thunderbird Collegiate

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Baylor men’s golf wrapped up the regular season with a tie for ninth at the Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Club on Saturday.

Johnny Keefer notched his fourth top-10 finish of the spring, finishing fifth with an 8-under 206. The senior has eight top-5 finishes in his career, the eighth most in program history. Luke Dossey carded a strong finish as an individual coming home with a tie for 20th.

Preston Summerhays took home the individual title with a 13-under 200, six shots ahead of Keefer, while his Sun Devils took home the team title with a 28-under 824, a shot better than in-state rival Arizona. BU finished with a score of 6-over 858 to tie with Notre Dame in ninth.

THE RUNDOWN
After sleeping on the overnight lead, Keefer shot an even-par 71 on Saturday. The senior bogeyed two of his first four holes before getting a shot back with a birdie at No. 5. He closed out the front nine with another bogey at No. 7 for a 2-over 38. After having success on the back nine all weekend, Keefer returned to the well again, making birdies at Nos. 11 and 14 for a 2-under inward half and a seventh-straight round at par or better.

Tyler Isenhart had another strong showing with a 2-under 69 on Saturday, his second-straight round under par. Following seven pars to start the day, the senior made a bogey at No. 8 and a birdie at No. 9 to close out an even-par 36 on the front nine. Turning to the back nine, Isenhart strung together a pair of birdies at Nos. 12 and 13 to dip into red figures and would stay there with five pars to finish up his weekend in a tie for 39th.

Zach Heffernan finished tied for 57th with a 3-over 74 on Saturday. The sophomore played a relatively clean front side with eight pars and only one bogey at No. 3. His back nine started with a bogey at No. 10 and a double bogey at No. 11 before he earned a couple of strokes back with birdies at Nos. 12 and 15 to get back to 2-over. A final bogey at No. 17 would drop him to 3-over, where he would finish his final round.

Drew Wrightson finished with a 3-over 74 on Saturday. The sophomore played a clean front side with eight pars surrounding a birdie at No. 5 to clear the front nine in red figures. On the back nine, Wrightson ran into a bit of trouble, carding bogeys at Nos. 11 and 14 and a double bogey at No. 16 to fall to 3-over. He would stay there with a pair of pars to finish and record a tie for 72nd.

Trey Bosco concluded his weekend with a 4-over 75 on Saturday and tied for 72nd. The former Texas Amateur champion fell to 3-over on the front nine with bogeys at Nos. 4, 6 and 8 but got a stroke back with a birdie at No. 9 for a 2-over 38 on the front side. The junior played his first seven holes on the back nine at even par with a bogey at No. 11 and a birdie at No. 15 but closed with bogeys at Nos. 17 and 18.

Dossey had a strong week as an individual finishing tied for 20th on the heels of a 2-over 73 on Saturday. The senior started strong on the back nine for a third-straight round with birdies at Nos. 11 and 12 to get in red figures quickly. After three-straight bogeys at Nos. 15, 16 and 17, Dossey carded a birdie at No. 18 to finish his front nine at even par. Following a bogey at No. 2 and a double bogey at No. 3, Dossey played his final six holes at 1-under, highlighted by a birdie at No. 9.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Johnny Keefer played the back nine at 6-under par for the week with a total of nine birdies.
  *   Keefer led the field in par-3 scoring average at 2.75.
  *   Keefer’s 15 birdies tied for the most in the field.
  *   Tyler Isenhart played consecutive rounds under par for the first time since the Trinity Forest Invitational in the fall.
  *   Luke Dossey finished at 2-under par, his first under-par tournament score since winning the Bear Brawl at 2-under in the fall.


STAT OF THE DAY
With 14 career top-10 finishes, Keefer now ranks among the top-10 in program history in that category.
