Baylor MGOLF in Eighth Place After Day One at the Thunderbird Collegiate

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Led by senior Johnny Keefer, Baylor men’s golf settled in eighth place after day one of the Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Club on Friday.

Keefer holds a share of the 36-hole lead for the third time in his Baylor career after an 8-under 134. Keefer was joined in the top-15 by his teammate Luke Dossey who finished Friday in a tie for 12th after a 4-under 138, playing as an individual.

Arizona State is leading the event after a 23-under 545, a shot ahead of in-state rival Arizona. BU's 2-over 570 has them just six shots back of the top-5 entering Saturday's final round. Keefer shares the individual lead with ASU’s Preston Summerhays, Arizona’s Sam Sommerhauser and North Carolina’s David Ford.

THE RUNDOWN
First Round
Keefer’s first-round 66 got underway with an early bogey at No. 2, but he finished the front nine in red figures with birdies at Nos. 5 and 9. Following a second bogey of the day at No. 10, the senior caught fire with a birdie at No. 12 and four more to end the round at Nos. 15-18.

Zach Heffernan shot a 1-under 70 in round one. He opened with a 2-under 34 on the front nine with birdies at Nos. 4 and 5. The sophomore opened the back nine with a bogey at No. 10 and another at No. 14 to fall back to even. Heffernan would finish in red figures with birdies at Nos. 15 and 17 around a bogey at No. 16.

Trey Bosco shot his second-straight round at par or better with a first-round 71. The Austin native started strong with a birdie at No. 2 but dropped back to even with a bogey at No. 4 for a 36 on his front nine. His second bogey of the day came at No. 13, but Bosco closed strong with a birdie at No. 18.

Drew Wrightson shot a 4-over 75 in round one. He fell to four over through six holes after a double bogey at No. 3 and bogeys at Nos. 4 and 6 before getting a stroke back with a birdie at No. 7. The sophomore steadied his round with eight-straight pars on the back nine before a bogey at the final hole dropped him back to 4-over in the opening round.

Tyler Isenhart also fired a 4-over 75 in the first round on Friday. He struggled on the front nine with bogeys at Nos. 3, 5 and 7, along with a double bogey at No. 6. The senior finished the front nine with a birdie to get to 4-over through nine holes. Following a birdie, double-bogey, bogey stretch, Isenhart made a pair of birdies at Nos. 15 and 18 on the way in to get back to 4-over on the round.

Dossey scorched the scorecard in the morning with a 3-under 68, his second-straight round in the 60s. The senior started at No. 10 with a double bogey but recovered nicely with a birdie at No. 13 and an eagle at No. 16 for a 1-under 34 on his first nine. After a pair of birdies at Nos. 3 and 4, Dossey bogeyed No. 6 but closed the round with a birdie at No. 9.

Round Two
Keefer picked up where he left off in round one, with a 3-under 68 in round two. Going back to the end of his first round, the senior started with a fifth-straight birdie at No. 1 and closed his opening nine with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 8 and 9 for a 3-under 33. Following a bogey at No. 10, Keefer bounced back with birdies at Nos. 11 and 12 before making his final bogey of the day at No. 16 to finish off his 3-under 68.

Isenhart shot a 1-under 70, his second under-par round in as many events. The Chicago, Ill., native started with a pair of bogeys on the front side at Nos. 3 and 7 for a 2-over 36 on his outward nine. The senior recorded a clean card on his inward half with birdies at Nos. 12, 14 and 16 for a 3-under 32 to close out his round in a tie for 48th.

Wrightson improved his second-round score by one in the final round with a 3-over 74. The sophomore opened with a pair of birdies at Nos. 1 and 2 but gave them back with bogeys at Nos. 4 and 6 for an even-par front side. On the back nine, Wrightson started strong again with a birdie at No. 11 but made bogeys at Nos. 13 and 17 around a double bogey at No. 14 for a 3-over 38 on the back nine to finish tied for 69th.

Heffernan shot a 5-over 76 in round two to finish the day tied for 56th. The Boerne native birdied the opening hole of his second round but made bogeys at Nos. 4, 7 and 9 for a 2-over 38 on the front nine. Starting with a birdie on the back side, Heffernan got a stroke back with a birdie at No. 12 before finishing with three more bogeys at Nos. 13, 17 and 18.

Bosco finished his day with a 6-over 77 putting him in a tie for 66th. He started his round six over through seven holes with bogeys at Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 7, along with a double bogey at No. 6, adding up to a 6-over 42 on the front side. After a final bogey at No. 13, Isenhart played his final five holes a 1-under par with a birdie at No. 17.

Dossey burst out of the gate on his back nine for the second-straight round with three-straight birdies at Nos. 10, 11 and 12. He reached 4-under on the round with a birdie at No. 15 but stumbled at No. 17 with a double-bogey for a 2-under 33 on his opening nine. After a birdie at No. 1 to start his second nine, Dossey made bogeys at Nos. 2 and 9 to close out the round in a tie for 12th.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Johnny Keefer tied for the best par-3 scoring average in the field at 2.63.
  *   The senior’s 12 birdies were the most in the field on Friday.
  *   Keefer tied for the third-best par-5 scoring average.
  *   Luke Dossey has recorded three-straight rounds at par or better for the first time in his career.
  *   Tyler Isenhart has shot at least one round at par or better in seven of his last eight events.


STAT OF THE DAY
With six-straight rounds at par or better, Johnny Keefer is in the midst of the longest stretch in his career.

The Bears will play with Oregon State in the final round on Saturday.
