CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – Baylor women’s golf pulled into a tie for fifth after round two of the Battle at the Beach on Saturday at Club Campestre San Jose.

The Bears were one of three teams to have three players in the lineup shoot under par on Saturday. Sera Hasegawa, Rosie Belsham and BaiMai Seema all turned in 1-under 70’s while Anika Ventemilla fired a career-best 68 as an individual.

At 7-over 575, BU is tied with Houston and is just three shots back of fourth-place Vanderbilt. Host TCU leads the event with a total of 9-under 559 through two rounds.

THE RUNDOWN
A day after shooting her career-best first-round score, Anika Veintemilla set a new overall career-best score with a 3-under 68. The senior made one bogey on the day, and it came on her second hole at No. 18. She immediately bounced back with a birdie at No. 1 and added three more at Nos. 8, 11 and 15 to finish Saturday in a tie for ninth.

Starting at No. 5 for a second-straight day, Hasegawa carded a pair of early bogeys on two of her first three holes. Like Friday, she would battle back to even par with birdies at Nos. 9 and 11. The sophomore played her next eight holes at even par with bogeys at Nos. 14 and 17 and birdies at Nos. 15 and 18. Hasegawa made her final bogey of the day at No. 2, before closing with two-straight birdies to get under par and climb into a tie for 11th.

Belsham started strong on Saturday with a birdie at No. 5 to begin her round. Following four-straight pars, the junior made her only bogey of the day at No. 10. She would bounce back with 12 pars and a birdie at No. 15 to get back under par and secure a tie for 11th entering the final round.

Seema also finished in red figures on Saturday with a 1-under 70 to pull into a tie for 30th. The sophomore started with a birdie at No. 7 before adding another at No. 10 to get to 2-under through four holes. She made a third birdie of the day at No. 13, but gave a stroke back with a bogey at No. 14 to finish her first nine at 2-under. She would reach 3-under with a birdie at 18, and remained there after a bogey at No. 2 and a birdie at No. 4. A double bogey at the last hole would cost her two more strokes for the day.

Silje Ohma is tied for 39th after a 1-over 72 on Saturday. The freshman started strong with a birdie on her first hole of the day at No. 6, but gave it right back with a bogey at No. 7. She would play her next 11 holes at 2-under par with birdies at Nos. 10, 16 and 18 around a bogey at No. 17. Three-straight bogeys at Nos. 1-3 dropped her back to 1-over, where she would finish after two more pars at Nos. 4 and 5.

Britta Snyder is tied for 54th following her 1-over 72 on Saturday. Following an opening bogey at No. 8, Snyder played the next seven holes at 1-under, thanks to a birdie at No. 13. She bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 to drop back to 2-over for the round. Turning to the front nine, she made one more birdie at No. 4 to finish strong.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Anika Veintemilla carded her career-best score with a 3-under 68.
  *   Veintemilla is toed for the second-best par-3 scoring average through two rounds (2.70).
  *   BU was one of just three teams to have three players at par or better on Saturday.
  *   Sera Hasegawa has five-straight rounds at par or better, the most since Gurleen Kaur had seven-straight last season.
  *   Through two rounds, BU leads the field in par-4 scoring average.
  *   BU’s 34 birdies are the third most in the field through two rounds.

Head coach Jay Goble – “It was a solid day for the Bears, and I am proud of how it was a total team effort with all of our scores around par today. I believe we actually left shots out there, and we are poised to have a great finish tomorrow."
