STANFORD, Calif. – Silje Ohma fired a 2-under 69 as the Baylor women’s golf team settled into 12th place after round one of the Stanford Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course.

BU's 4-over 288 puts them within five shots of the top 5 and 12 shots back of host Stanford, whose 8-under 276 leads the field after day one.

Friday marks the third time Ohma has carded the team’s best score in four rounds this season. She is the first BU freshman since Hayley Davis in 2011 to record the team’s best score in three of her first four career rounds.

THE RUNDOWN
Ohma opened her round with a bogey at the par-4 10th, but responded with five-straight pars and an eagle, her third of the season, to get into red figures for the first time. After eight more pars, she carded a birdie at the par-5 7th to finish off a 2-under 69 and put her in a tie for the ninth.

Sera Hasegawa finished two shots off Ohma’s score en route to an even-par 71 and a tie for 22nd after day one. The sophomore transfer from East Tennessee State bogeyed three of her first six holes to drop to 3-over. She got a pair of strokes back at No. 18 and No. 1 with a couple of birdies as she made the turn. Six more pars and a birdie at the par-3 8th got her back to even par for the day.

Rosie Belsham shot a 1-over 72 to finish tied for 30th after one round. The junior started with bogeys on three of her first four holes. From there, she went birdie-double bogey-birdie to remain at 3-over through eight holes. Belsham bogeyed No. 18 and finished her outward nine with just two pars en route to a 4-over 40. Turning to the front nine, she started with a pair of pars before two birdies at Nos. 3 and 4. One more birdie at No. 7 helped her finish with a 3-under 32 on her closing nine.

BaiMai Seema is tied for 78th after round one on the heels of a 5-over 76. Starting on No. 10, she bogeyed Nos. 12, 14 and 16 for a 3-over 39 on her opening nine. After turning to the front side, she bogeyed No. 2 and double bogeyed No. 3 but rebounded with five-straight pars and a birdie on her final hole of the day at No. 9.

Britta Snyder finished tied for 94th after an 8-over 79 on Friday. The junior started four over on her first three holes before carding her first birdie of the day at No. 14, before finishing her opening nine with four-straight pars. On the front side, Snyder double bogeyed Nos. 2 and 4 and bogeyed Nos. 6 and 9 around her second birdie of the day at No. 7.

QUOTABLE:
Head coach Jay Goble on the team’s opening round – “This is a challenging golf course. When you don't play in a golf tournament for three weeks, sometimes it’s hard to see what you need to work on. I think we were a little rusty because we hadn't competed in so long. To see how we finished the last nine holes was exciting. Sera [Hasegawa] played great, Silje [Ohma] played awesome, Rosie [Belsham] played really well on the last nine holes, so I see a lot of positives going into tomorrow."

Head Coach Jay Goble on Silje Ohma’s Round – “For her to show patience and regroup after that opening bogey and play awesome the rest of the day was fantastic. I told her, ‘This just shows you how to play good golf. You have to hit one shot at a time, forget about what's already happened, and stay in the present,’.”

WHAT’S NEXT
BU will play with No. 10 Southern Cal and Miami in round two on Saturday morning beginning at 2:55 p.m. CT on the No. 1 Tee. Britta Snyder will lead things off, followed by BaiMai Seema at 3:06 p.m. Rosie Belsham will take the tee at 3:17, followed by Sera Hasegawa at 3:28 p.m. Silje Ohma will play out of the anchor position at 3:39 p.m.
