WACO, Texas -- Senior Isabella Harvison, ranked No. 72 in the fall by the ITA, earned a ranked win to highlight day one of the Baylor women’s tennis H-E-B Invite, held at the Hurd Tennis Center on Friday.



Harvison, a native of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif., topped No. 96 Elza Tomase, from Tennessee, to open the day, 6-1, 6-4. She advances to the quarterfinals of the event to face Texas Tech’s Metka Komac on Saturday.



Baylor had a pair of doubles matches involving sophomore Brooke Thompson – out of Oklahoma City, Okla. – and freshman Liubov Kostenko, a native of Kriviy Rih, Ukraine, with the pair of Bears falling vs. squads from Tennessee and Texas Tech.



In singles, Baylor also had Kostenko, Thompson and Paula Barañano compete on day one.

“A great day of tennis today,” Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano said. “It is always a blessing to be playing at home. We’re excited for our student-athletes that were able to compete today. Ultimately, tennis is an imperfect sport and today we had some ups and downs but we are moving in the right direction. Really liked our attitude in the matches, we had that fighter mindset so that was positive. We need to serve better tomorrow and we talked to the team about that. We’ll play with a lot more purpose tomorrow and we’re excited to get back out there.”



WHAT’S NEXT

The second day of the H-E-B Invite will start on Saturday at 9 a.m. with doubles, following by singles at 10 a.m. The event will continue at 1 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
