WACO, Texas – The No. 15-ranked Baylor volleyball team heads down I-35 looking for a crucial win on Saturday in Austin, facing top-ranked Texas at 7 p.m. in Gregory Gymnasium.

The Bears (22-5, 11-3 Big 12 Conference) take on the Longhorns (20-1, 13-1 Big 12) for the second time on the season, this time in the capital city.

The series between Baylor and Texas is one of the most-played and longest-standing matchups for BU’s program with 92 matches to date. There were matches recorded in both 1974 and 1975 before the Bears’ program was established as a varsity sport.

Baylor heads south coming off a 3-1 win over Iowa State at home, avenging its road loss to the Cyclones in late September. Texas is coming off a 3-0 home sweep of Kansas to host the Bears.

As of Thursday, BU’s Kara McGhee is ranked first in the conference and sixth nationally for blocks per set at 1.51, while being first in the conference and third in the NCAA for total blocks with 149 recorded. She had her 500th career block in the first set against ISU, ranking sixth overall and third in the rally-scoring era in BU’s record book.

Freshman setter Averi Carlson remains in the top 20 of the NCAA for assists per set, second in the Big 12 at 10.81, while being 26th in the nation and first in the conference for total assists with 1,070.

Mallory Talbert and McGhee continue to lead the Baylor squad in hitting percentage, with Talbert at 0.404 (18th in NCAA, 2nd Big 12) and McGhee at 0.395 (22nd in NCAA, 3rd Big 12). The Baylor team is second in the conference in most statistical categories, all behind Texas, except in opponent hitting percentage where it allows just 0.178 from their foes to lead the league.

UT and BU have been voted to finish first and second, respectively, in the Big 12 for the last five seasons, and it has finished that way in all but one of those years, when the two programs tied for first in 2019. The Longhorns have already clinched a share of the Big 12 title for this season, and if Baylor wins against both Texas and Kansas State, it will own the other half of the title.

The match will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network with Alex Loeb and Jennifer Hoffman on the call. Fans can keep up with live stats at TexasSports.com.

A full recap and final stats will be available on BaylorBears.com after the conclusion of the match.
