SAN DIEGO – Two Baylor men’s tennis players, Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi, got their start to the 2022 ITA Fall National Championships on Monday with a win in both singles and doubles play.
THE RUNDOWN
After just over a two-hour rain delay, Bass took an opening round win over Crowley College’s Takeshi Taco in a three-setter, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Bass’ comeback in singles moves him to 11-2 on the fall season.
After dropping the first set of their round one doubles match, 6-4, Bass and Grassi Mazzuchi came out fighting in set two, quickly winning the first game and taking the set, 6-2. In the 10-point tie break, the pair survived two match points, as the Sooners had chances at 9-7 and 9-8, but they didn’t find another point and the Bears won four-straight to secure the 11-9 breaker victory.
WHAT’S NEXT
Finn Bass opens play on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. against Nishesh Basavareddy, No. 3 seed of the tournament and No. 2 in the preseason newcomer rankings. The doubles duo will take the court again at a time TBA on Thursday to face Florida Atlantic's Nicolas Acevedo & Filip Krolo in the round of 16.
