No. 11 Baylor VB Gets 3-1 Win over Texas Tech
Bears take season series from Red Raiders with the win on Wednesday

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 11-ranked Baylor volleyball team won 3-1 over Texas Tech in United Supermarkets Arena on Wednesday night in Lubbock.

The Bears (20-4, 9-2 Big 12 Conference) took the season series with the Red Raiders (14-9, 3-7 Big 12) with the win, 25-17, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23.

With the victory, BU has had seven-straight seasons with 20 or more wins, all under head coach Ryan McGuyre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
Kara McGhee started the set for the Bears with a kill, then an emphatic kill from Allie Sczech continued the roll. Elise McGhee got two blocks on the board to make it 4-2, BU up early. Kara got a tipped ball to advance BU to 7-4. The Red Raiders called timeout at 10-5, then Baylor put four more points on them with a Mallory Talbert tip, now 14-7. Kara got another kill to make it 18-10, with TTU calling for another timeout. Riley Simpson hit for the 20th point of the match, the Bears up 20-11. She then served up an ace to make it 23-15 to end a 3-0 run. Elise McGhee hit a fastball for the set point, and an ace from Lauren Briseño finished off the set, 25-17.

Set 2
Set two started the way set one ended, with a Baylor ace, this time from Averi Carlson. Sczech got a kill to put them up 2-1, followed by a block from the McGhee sisters. They continued their rampage with Kara McGhee getting a kill and then Elise McGhee up next, the score now 5-1. BU had an ace served up by Simpson and then the run came to an end, seven-straight points scored, with a kill from Kara, now 8-1. TTU went on a run, started by a kill from Kenna Sauer, the run ending at 8-5. Kara McGhee got the kill to end it, and then Talbert made it 11-8. Simpson had the next kill to extend the lead, 12-8. Tech got five points in a row unanswered and BU called timeout as TTU pulled ahead 13-12. Simpson got the kill out of it to tie the teams up at 13-all. Kara McGhee and Sczech got back-to-back kills, followed by another Sczech kill to have the score tilt back their way, 16-15. Elise McGhee got a solo block at 17-15, and TTU called time after a ball handling error from Reese Rhodes. The 20th point of the set was a block from Talbert and Sczech. Sczech and Talbert got the 22nd and 23rd points but it was Elise McGhee to make it set point. The final point of the set, 25-20, was a block from Talbert and Simpson.

Set 3
The third frame started in BU’s favor at 2-1 with a block and a Briseño ace, but then Tech went on a tear. TTU up 8-3, Cassie Davis got a kill, then Baylor called time after an attack error at 10-4. Talbert got her second ace of the match at 10-7, assisting in closing the gap. TTU kept at it, and got an ace of their own at 14-10. Sczech got a kill but the bleeding had begun, now 16-12. Kenna Sauer of the Red Raiders got three kills in a row, now 19-12. Simpson got a kill at 23-14, and Allie Andrew staved off set point from Texas Tech, but the set ended on a Brooke Kanas kill, 25-16.

Set 4
The Bears were fired up and went up 6-2 on the Red Raiders to start the third, but then Tech scored six unanswered to match BU, 6-6, then go up 8-6 over them. Talbert revved her engine and got a kill out of the BU timeout, then Simpson recorded a solo block, now tied 8-8. Tied again at 9-9, Tech got three-straight to go up 12-9. In return, the Bears scored three in a row, two being back-to-back aces from Simpson to tie it at 12-all. Elise McGhee tied it at 13 all with a kill off Briseño. Kara McGhee brought the Bears back-to-back kills to put the Bears up 16-15, Tech calling timeout. Out of it, Reese Rhodes of TTU had a double touch, and Kara got another kill at 18-16. Sczech gave the Bears their 20th point, now ahead 20-17. Talbert made it 21-18, then got another kill at 22-19, then another at 23-21. A TTU attack error made it match point Baylor, and BU called timeout at 24-22. The Bears took the match off a Kara McGhee kill, 25-23.

STAT OF THE MATCH

  *   Riley Simpson served up four aces for the Bears.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   The win was BU’s 20th of the season, meaning Baylor has had seven-straight seasons with 20 or more wins.
  *   The Bears had nine aces in the match, with Simpson serving up four of them.
  *   Middle blocker Kara McGhee led the team with 16 kills, the only BU player to have double-digit kills.
  *   Mallory Talbert led in blocks with five.

The Bears return home to face Kansas on Saturday, Nov. 5, with a 2 p.m. start time on ESPN+.
