Baylor MT’s Bass, Lah Move to Sweet 16 in NCAA Doubles
Bears defeat Virginia Tech duo to advance

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Baylor men’s tennis’ Tadeas Paroulek competed in the Singles Round of 32 while pairs Finn Bass/Sven Lah and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi/Matias Soto competed in the Doubles Round of 32 on Tuesday at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.

Bass and Lah advance to the doubles round of 16 with their win over the Virginia Tech duo.

THE RUNDOWN
Sophomore Paroulek began the day for the Bears, competing in the second round of the Singles Championship against Georgia’s Hamish Stewart. The first set went to a tiebreaker, with Paroulek coming away on top, 7-6 (7-4). The second set went to Stewart at 6-2, followed by the third at 6-3. Paroulek finishes his first season as a Bear with a 24-6 singles record, including a 16-2 record in dual play. His career record is now 43-25 in singles.

In doubles play, Soto and Grassi Mazzuchi got underway first, facing Florida’s Ben Shelton and Sam Riffice. The Bears stayed close to the Gators in the first set, but fell 6-4. In set two, BU’s duo started a comeback but were cut short, falling 6-3. Grassi Mazzuchi and Soto finish their season with a record of 21-7, including a 6-4 record against ranked opponents.

The third-seeded duo of Bass and Lah faced Virginia Tech’s No. 30-ranked Jordan Chrysostom and Ryan Fishback for the second Baylor doubles match of the day. The first set moved quickly, and the BU duo came out on top with a 6-4 set win, despite the start of a Hokie comeback. Set two belonged to the Bears with a 6-3 set win to close it out. Bass and Lah improve to 24-10 on the season with the victory and are 8-7 against ranked opponents.

Bass and Lah will face Cornell’s No. 36-ranked Alafia Ayeni and Vladislav Melnic on Wednesday, May 25.
