THE RUNDOWN
NORMAN, Okla. – No. 22 Baylor (13-5, 4-1) battled in a match that was closer than the final score appeared. In a 6-1 loss to No. 3 Oklahoma (18-1, 2-0), the Bears never gave up.

The doubles action featured a stellar comeback on court one in addition to a tiebreaker to decide the point on court two. Those storylines continued in singles as four of the six courts went to three sets.

Oklahoma quickly had the advantage in doubles with a 6-0 win on court three. Things looked like the Sooners might wrap up the doubles point soon after, but the Bears staged a comeback.

No. 5 Mel Krywoj and Alicia Herrero were locked in a top-5 showdown on court one against No. 4 Carmen and Ivana Corley. The Bears trailed by as much as 2-5 at one point before they reeled off five-straight sets to get the win.

That left the doubles point to be decided on court two where Baylor featured a pair of freshmen – Ana Carmen Zamburek and Anita Sahdiieva – against No. 50 Alexandra Pisareva and Layne Sleeth. The Bears, after trailing 3-4 at one point, fought back to force a tiebreaker. Back and forth the teams went before the Sooners prevailed, 10-8.

In singles, Oklahoma continued the momentum with back-to-back wins on the top two courts. But Baylor wasn’t done yet.

Krywoj came back from dropping the first set to getting the Bears on the board with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win on court three over No. 56 Ivana Corley.

Freshmen Alina Shcherbinina and Sahdiieva also battled on courts four and five, respectively, but Oklahoma eventually prevailed.

On court six, Paula Baranano refused to go down without a fight. The junior, after dropping her first set, fought back to force a tiebreaker in the second, which she ultimately won to force a third set. And again, she battled through another tiebreaker but fell short at the end.

QUOTE
Joey Scrivano on the match…
“Tough match today. Credit to OU for dealing with the up and downs of the match better than we did. There is no questions that we did some good things, but there are always areas to improve. Lots of good lessons for us today and lots of positives that we can build on. Ultimately, we need to bounce back quickly and prepare for Sunday.”
