AUSTIN, Texas – Baylor track and field opened up its first day in the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays with nine athletes competing on Thursday. It was a slow day for the Bears, everywhere but on the track.



“I thought the hurdle group did well,” said head coach Michael Ford. “Coach Ben (Dalton) really had them ready to go. Both Nathaniel (Ezekiel) and Gontse (Morake) had solid openers.”



Nathaniel Ezekiel set the top spot in the qualifying round of the 400-meter hurdles with a 49.14-second race. That time sets the current No. 1 mark in the nation so far this outdoor season and sets him up as the No. 3 400 hurdler in program history. Jayson Baldridge followed closely behind in seventh-place, running a 51.14 race and qualifying for the finals.



Gontse Morake ran a 58.53-second race in the women’s 400-meter hurdles to secure the eighth slot in the prelims and qualify for the final round on Friday. Her time also put her as the fifth-best runner in program history. Jasmine Gryne just missed the top-9 qualifying spots, finishing in 11th.



In the B block of the men’s 400 hurdles, Eli Morris clocked a 54.75-second race in the timed final to finish in 20th-place. Briana Garcia got the 12th-place finish in the women’s race with a 1:02.12 finish.



After the first three throws in the B section of the men’s javelin throw, Luke Anthony qualified to the finals, where he finished in eighth place with a 182-3 throw.



On the distance stretch, Ellie Friesen recorded a ninth-place finish in the women’s 1,500 meters with a 4:34.20 clocking, while Taylor Whitfield finished the 5,000 meters in sixth-place with a time of 16:44.76.
