ATLANTA – Baylor’s Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua has been named to the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year watch list, as announced Thursday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Tchamwa Tchatchoua is one of 15 players named to the midseason watch list and joins Texas Tech’s Kevin McCullar and Iowa State’s Tyrese Hunter to give the Big 12 Conference three representatives on the list.
Baylor has been represented regularly on the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year lists in the past. Davion Mitchell won the award in 2021, while Mark Vital was a finalist in 2020 and a semifinalist in 2021. Additionally, Jared Butler joined Mitchell and Vital on the midseason watch list a season ago.
Known as “Everyday Jon” by his coaches because he brings the same infectious energy to the team every day, the UNLV transfer has appeared in all 20 games for the 18-2 Bears.
A 6-foot-8, 250-pount forward capable of guarding all five positions, Tchamwa Tchatchoua is averaging 8.1 points per game and ranks third in the Big 12 with 7.6 rebounds per game, despite coming off the bench. He is coming off his second double-double of the season, recording 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 74-49 win over Kansas State on Tuesday.
The Atlanta Tipoff Club will announce the 10 semifinalists for the Naismith Men's Defensive Player of the Year next month. The award is voted on by a panel of national media with the final announcement being made Final Four weekend.
Tchamwa Tchatchoua and the Bears return to action at 3 p.m. CT Saturday when they play a road game at Alabama as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Bears are 7-1 all time in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, the best record of any team in either league.
