Baylor’s Akinjo Wins Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

WACO, Texas – Baylor senior guard James Akinjo has been named Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday.
This marks Akinjo’s third Big 12 weekly award of the season, as he was previously named Big 12 Player of the Week on Jan. 3 and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Jan. 10. Akinjo joins Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji and Iowa State’s Izaiah Brockington as the only players to win Big 12 weekly awards in three weeks this season.
The Oakland, Calif., native averaged 15.0 points, 7.5 assists and 2.5 steals in Baylor’s wins at Kansas State and against No. 20 Texas. The Arizona transfer stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points and team-highs of eight assists and three steals in 35 minutes of the win at Kansas State, and he followed with 15 points and team-highs of seven assists and two steals in 38 minutes of Saturday’s win over Texas. Saturday’s effort marked his 15th double-digit scoring output of the season and the 64th in his collegiate career.
Akinjo is the Big 12 Conference leader in assists with 5.7 assists per game. He also ranks second in the league with 2.2 steals per game and ninth with 13.1 points per game.
Akinjo and the No. 7 Bears return to action Wednesday when they head to Lubbock to take on No. 11 Texas Tech at 8 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ESPN2 with Jon Sciambi and Fran Fraschila on the call from United Supermarkets Arena.
