THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (20-17) made use of a four-run sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Sam Houston (19-17) Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark, 9-5.

The Bears were down 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but erased the three-run deficit to outscore SHSU 8-1 over the final five innings. Jack Pineda, Tre Richardson and Cam Caley each drove in two runs, while Richardson and Kyle Nevin collected two hits in the win.

In the second inning, each team scored a run as BU answered the Bearkats’ opening tally with an RBI single from Richardson. After SHSU put up three in the top of the fourth, Caley’s two-run double in the bottom half pulled the Bears back within a run.

In the sixth, Nevin tripled and later scored on a Chase Wehsener base hit that knotted the line at 4-4. Then, Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo blooped in a run-scoring single and Pineda opened it up with a two-run double to the right-center gap to make it 7-4.

From there, it was a solo home run by Ian Groves in the seventh that widened the margin at 8-4. Sam Houston scored once in the top of the eighth, but another Richardson run-scoring single kept BU ahead by four, 9-5.

Senior RHP Jake Jackson got the win, going 2.2 innings of scoreless work and picking up two strikeouts. Matt Voelker worked a three-inning save, allowing one run on four hits but striking out four batters along the way.

TOP QUOTES
Head coach Steve Rodriguez
On tonight’s game…
“I’ll tell you what, Sam Houston might be one of the best hitting teams in the country. The way they come in, they have several guys hitting over .400, a lot of guys in the high .300’s, it’s a really impressive offense. I told our guys, we can give up as many hits as we want, just don’t surrender runs and we did just that. They had guys in scoring position several times and we were able to get out of it. We had double plays. The bases-loaded double play with [SHSU’s Carlos] Contreras, who might be one of the best hitters in the country, was huge. A 1-2-3 double play is not a very typical one, but when you get it, it’s usually a big deal. Jake Jackson did a great job executing that play.”

Junior INF Jack Pineda
On the win…
“I’m really proud of us. I think it’s really easy when a team is hitting like that to fold and just look forward to the series we have this weekend. It’s kind of been the story all along. We haven’t necessarily been out of games, besides maybe Texas State. We’re going to creep back into every game and it’s all about capitalizing at the right time. It’s just about creating our own luck and I think we’ve seen that this week.”

Senior LHP Matt Voelker
On how it felt to close it out…
“It felt great. We’ve been playing well, carrying over the weekend into the midweeks. Phenomenal execution on the mound, defense, offense. It was a great team win.”

WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor (20-17, 4-8) heads south to Austin for a three-game series at No. 10 Texas (26-13, 6-6). Game one is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
