MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – No. 11 Baylor volleyball fought with West Virginia to a 3-1 win in WVU Coliseum on Saturday night.

Marieke van der Mark was a force in the first set with two kills and three blocks. Yossiana Pressley continued her prowess with 19 kills and had a near double-double with nine digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One
The Bears started up early on WVU, and Avery Skinner had recorded five kills by the first media timeout. Marieke van der Mark had a big block with Elise McGhee to help make it 18-11. Baylor was cruising and brought it to 21-13 with Kara McGhee recording two solo blocks. She made a third just after and the set was over at 25-16, BU making quick work in the first frame.

Set Two
Baylor started the frame with a challenge, the call being overturned in their favor, but then WVU would go on to score five unanswered. The Bears came roaring back to make it 9-6 thanks to Pressley, as well as Kara and Elise McGhee. An ace for West Virginia tied it up at 12-12, but Pressley had a kill to sway it back to the Bears. The teams traded one more point to each other and then the Bears went on a spree of 7-3. The Mountaineers challenged a Pressley kill but it was unsuccessful, confirming the score to be 24-18. Pressley finished off the set at 25-19.

Set Three
BU went on a four-point scoring run to kick off the third frame at 4-1. Two errors made it 5-4 but a Skinner kill helped push it back. Kara McGhee had another kill and made it 8-5. Baylor then went up by as much as four and then WVU crept back up. The Bears tried to pull away once again and made it up to 15-11 with kills from Sedwick and Kara McGhee. Out of the media timeout, BU and WVU traded a few points, with the Bears still leading. Shanel Bramschreiber served up an ace at 23-17 but it was followed by two West Virginia kills. At 23-20, Baylor called for a timeout, WVU being on a five-point run. The Mountaineers stretched it out to a 10-point scoring run to end the set 25-23.

Set Four
Baylor started out down with a three-point run from WVU. The Bears countered with two points, but then West Virginia continued their push. Skinner had a kill to make it 9-5, but the Mountaineers held strong. Down by six at 12-6, BU called for a pause. Elise McGhee and Pressley scored back-to-back kills to lessen the lead to 15-11. Then two more emphatic kills from Pressley, three in a row, made it 15-13 and WVU called for a timeout of their own. A service error on both sides of the set made it 20-18 Baylor. The teams tied it up at 21-all and West Virginia called for another pause. From that point on, the Bears and Mountaineers were trading points. They climbed to 26-26 with a Pressley kill tying it up. A Preslie Anderson kill tied it at 27-all, then two attack errors from WVU, the last being blocked by Anderson, ended the set at 29-27 to give the match win to Baylor.

QUOTABLE – Head Coach Ryan McGuyre
“We put ourselves in a dangerous position tonight, but responded with some good grit. Hannah Sedwick has been playing at an elite level and provided great leadership and poise. Preslie Anderson came in with some clutch kills and we had good production out of Kara [McGhee] in the middle. WVU is playing their best volleyball I’ve seen since being at Baylor. Elise McGhee made some big swings for us at crucial times.”
