FORT WORTH, Texas – Baylor women’s tennis senior Alicia Herrero Linana took down the top seed to advance to the semifinal round of the ITA Regionals on Saturday afternoon. Herrero Linana battled through three sets to defeat Texas A&M’s Tatiana Makarova, 6-4 2-6, 1-0 (10-4). Makarova came in at No. 10 in the ITA’s Preseason rankings that were released Sept. 7. Herrero Linana was ranked No. 110.

Also moving on to Sunday’s semifinals – and ranked No. 37 for the preseason by the ITA – is senior Mel Krywoj. Krywoj, the second seed of this weekend’s tournament, continued her dominance in Fort Worth with a fourth win in straight sets, this one by a final score of 6-4, 6-3, over Texas A&M’s Jayci Goldsmith.

Herrero Linana will face the winner between Malaika Rapolu (Texas) and Mary Stoiana (Texas A&M), while Krywoj plays fifth-seeded Kylie Collins from Texas. Both matches are slated to take place at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, Herrero Linana and Krywoj advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins. Herrero Linana defeated seventh-seed Jackie Nylander of SMU, 7-6(4), 6-3. Krywoj topped Jasmine Adams of North Texas, 6-2, 6-0.

Getting things started for the Bears on Saturday was the duo of Paula Barañano and Ana Carmen Zamburek.
They defeated UTA’s Carla Pons and Nika Novikova, 8-7(6), in their first match to play together. The duo advances to Sunday’s Round of 16 at 9 a.m. against Gianna Pielet and Mary Stoiana of Texas A&M.

Herrero Linana and Krywoj also advanced to the next round in doubles play with their 8-4 victory over Texas State’s Hana Kvapilova and Rishona Israel-Lewis. They will face Houston’s Maria Dzemeshkevich and Azul Pedemonti at 9 a.m.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Of Mel Krywoj’s eight set wins in the ITA Regional tournament, three of them have come by a final score of 6-0.
  *   Baylor advances both of its doubles tandems to the Round of 16, while a pair of singles players – Alicia Herrero Linana and Krywoj – move on to the semifinals.
  *   Herrero Linana defeated No. 10 Tatiana Makarova.
  *   In their first match together, Paula Barañano and Ana Carmen Zamburek recorded a win.
