IRVING, Texas – Baylor men’s basketball has been picked to finish third in the Big 12 Conference standings in the 2022 Big 12 Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. This marks a third-consecutive season the Bears have been picked top-three in the league’s preseason poll.

The Bears received 67 points in the preseason poll, trailing only Kansas (80) and Texas (70). KU had eight first-place votes, while Texas received the two remaining first-place votes. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own teams. Texas Tech (51) was picked fourth, and Oklahoma State (49) and West Virginia (49) tied for fifth, followed by Oklahoma (29), TCU (24), Kansas State (22) ninth and Iowa State (9).

This is the sixth time in the last 11 seasons the Bears have been picked top-three in the league after being picked top-three only once in the conference’s first 15 seasons (tied for third in 2009).

Baylor was projected to win the Big 12 for the first time in last year’s preseason poll, and the Bears held true, going 13-1 to claim their first conference championship since 1950. BU was picked second in the league in 2020 and again met that projection with a second-place finish at 15-3. Baylor’s 28-4 league record over the last two seasons is the best in the conference.

The Bears were projected to finish ninth in the 2019 season’s preseason poll, but the Bears overcame injuries to four potential starters to finish fourth and advance to the NCAA Tournament second round, setting up the historic 28-4 run over the next two seasons.

Head coach Scott Drew enters his 19th season at Baylor in 2021-22. He holds a 390-226 career record over 19 years as a Division I coach, including a 370-215 mark at BU. Drew’s teams have combined to post a 334-146 record over the last 14 seasons, recording a 27-10 record over 12 postseason appearances in that span.

Baylor opens the 2021-22 season on Friday, Nov. 12, with a home game against Incarnate Word. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT on ESPN+, and there will be a pregame National Championship banner unveiling and ring ceremony at the Ferrell Center.
