OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Baylor volleyball’s outside hitter Avery Skinner was announced as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS award, the organization announced Thursday.

The award recognizes excellence both on and off the court.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Skinner is a fifth-year senior, transferring to BU after four years at Kentucky. She graduated from UK with two degrees: communication studies and disorders, as well as interdisciplinary early childhood education. She is studying toward her master’s in communication sciences and disorders at Baylor and currently has a 4.0 GPA in pursuit of it.

While at Kentucky, she was named to the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America first team, and received recognition on the SEC First Year Honor Roll, a two-time Academic All-SEC selection, and named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll for all eligible years.

Outside the classroom, she was Kentucky’s representative on the SEC Community Service Team for volleyball in 2020-21. She volunteered hundreds of hours of service in both local communities and on mission trips. She spent much of that time in Early Childhood centers, NICUs, hospitals, as well as Hearing and Speech clinics.

Skinner is a finalist for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year award, and she is one of the most respected players in every locker room and arena she has entered. A well-spoken young woman, she is a friendly face to all.

On the floor, Skinner is hard to beat. She is nearing her 1,000th career kill across her time at both Baylor and Kentucky, just needing nine more to hit the major milestone. As a Wildcat, she led her team to win the 2020-21 National Championship, also being named to the All-Tournament Team by the NCAA. Not to be outdone, she was also named an AVCA First Team All-American and AVCA All-Region selection. Entering play at Baylor, she was a unanimous All-Big 12 Preseason selection.

Last week she earned her first weekly Big 12 honor as the Offensive Player of the Week. She earned the accolade after being Baylor’s leader in kills for the weekend against Texas Tech, recording 27 kills the first night and 22 the second for 49 overall. She had back-to-back double-doubles as well, and recorded the most receptions on the team both nights. She broke her career record for both kills and total attacks on the first night against the Red Raiders.

Skinner is the fourth Baylor Bear to be named to the preliminary list, joining Yossiana Pressley, Katie Staiger, and Shelley Stafford who all went on to become Top 10 finalists for the honor.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later this month, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
