Baylor MT’s Boitan Helps Romania Advance to Davis Cup Qualifiers

WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s tennis junior Adrian Boitan played and won in his Davis Cup debut on Sunday in Transylvania, defeating a Peruvian player to help Team Romania.

With Boitan’s help, Romania will play in April’s Davis Cup Qualifiers after defeating Peru in the knock-outs of the World Group I stage.

Romanian players Nicolae Frunza and Marius Copil both won their singles matches against respective Peruvian singles, then Copil and Horia Tecau won their doubles match prior to Boitan’s bout. Boitan faced Jorge Brian Panta and won his singles match 6-4, 6-4 to seal the 4-0 win for Romania. Because of his win, Frunza did not need to play the fifth match for Romania.

“It was special,” said Boitan. “To be honest, I expected to be way more nervous during the match or before it, but an important college match gets me way more nervous. Probably because there is so much going on, multiple courts, people screaming everywhere and all that. Here, yes, you are playing on a team for your country, but still, you are alone on the court with the captain, which is something that I’m used to. I definitely loved it out there and learned a lot this week. I’m really pumped to come back to my team in the USA.”

Boitan was the second Baylor men’s tennis player to be invited to the Davis Cup this season, as Matias Soto was selected by the Chilean team earlier this fall.

Another Bear was involved in Davis Cup play on the weekend, with former All-American John Peers winning doubles with partner Alex Bolt to clinch a win for Australia over Hungary in the Finals Group D. Peers and Bolt defeated Hungarians Fabian Marozsan and Zsombor Piros, 6-3, 6-7(13), 6-3.
