FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 6 Baylor volleyball defeated TCU in Schollmaier Arena on Friday, 3-1, behind senior superstar Yossiana Pressley.

BU took the match 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 26-24 against the Frogs in the first match of the back-to-back series.

The Bears (15-5, 9-2) had what they needed from both Pressley and Avery Skinner against the Horned Frogs (8-13, 2-9) with 16 kills from Pressley and 14 from Skinner.

Pressley needed just 11 kills to become the all-time career kills leader for Baylor, aiming for 2,273. She surpassed Elisha Polk for the title, and finished the night with 2,278 kills in her five-year career as a Bear.

Head coach Ryan McGuyre now has 75 Big 12 Conference wins under his belt with the defeat of TCU, while Baylor volleyball as a whole now has 201.

Lauren Harrison joined Pressley and Skinner with double-digit kills on the night, recording 10 of her own. Shanel Bramschreiber led the team with 10 digs, while Kara McGhee led in blocks with four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE
Bears started off well with the first two points in their favor, the second being a Shanel Bramschreiber ace. The teams traded points and Baylor kept them close. BU challenged a point and had their challenge confirmed, making it 13-12 Baylor. The teams continued to go back and forth until it was 21-18 in the Bears’ favor, causing a TCU timeout. Baylor pulled ahead by just a touch more off a Pressley kill, and forced another pause from the Frogs. The set ended at 25-21 with an attack error called on TCU’s Julia Adams.

SET TWO
TCU won the first point, but BU came right back and scored their own. Some costly errors diminished the lead and allowed TCU to tie it up at 7-7. Marieke van der Mark entered the set from the start to help push some energy in the Bears’ direction. TCU’s blocking was strong and after the Frogs made it 11-9, McGuyre called timeout. The Horned Frogs pushed ahead to 13-9. TCU continued their run, making it 16-11. At 17-11, McGuyre pulled his troops together again. The Bears started their comeback, going on a run of their own to make it 17-14 and bring themselves within three. After TCU scored their 20th point, the balls kept coming in Baylor’s gaps. The set ended, 25-19, on a serving error by BU after another three-point TCU run.

SET THREE
Now tied at 1-1, the Bears decided they didn’t like that taste in their mouths, and started off the third the way they wanted. Baylor scored the first couple of points and got back in their rhythm, but missed balls helped TCU catch up. Mistakes and misses proved costly as the Frogs caught up at 9-9. Baylor pulled ahead, but TCU stayed close behind. Lauren Briseño served up an ace to make it 15-11 and TCU called timeout. Baylor answered with a big block by Pressley and Kara McGhee to make it 21-14. A Pressley kill made it set point at 24-16, and an attack error from TCU’s Taylor Raiola sealed the Baylor set win, 25-16.

SET FOUR
Just two points into the set, TCU challenged McGhee’s kill unsuccessfully. Pressley recorded a kill, needing just one more for her milestone. Bramschreiber recorded an ace, then Pressley had her 2,273rd kill to make her the all-time career leader in kills for Baylor at 8-6 with TCU leading. The Frogs decided 12-11 was too close for comfort and called timeout. BU tied it up at 14-all and then 15-all. Then a service error on the Frogs put it back in Baylor’s control. TCU called timeout, then successfully challenged a call to make the score 17-all. The Bears put themselves up 20-18 on a Skinner kill, but then TCU made a climb back up. Tied at 23-23 from a Pressley kill, TCU answered with one of their own. Lauren Harrison came right back with one for herself, and a huge block by Andressa Parise helped close the match, followed by a Pressley kill to seal it shut at 26-24.

BEAR BITES

  * Yossiana Pressley is now the all-time career kills leader at Baylor with 2,278.
  * Baylor is 75-32 in Big 12 play under head coach Ryan McGuyre and 201-270 in Big 12 matches overall.
  * Andressa Parise was the spark the Bears needed toward the end of the match, starting the final set and delivering a crucial block at 25-24.
  * The series with the Frogs remains in the Bears’ control, now at 20-7 overall and 8-5 in Schollmaier Arena.

QUOTABLE – Head coach Ryan McGuyre
“A good, ugly win for us tonight. Definitely not sharp in too many areas of our game. I thought Briseño had some good serves and good passing for us down the stretch, had some good swings. Our blocking didn’t really come around until the end of the night. Excited to get back after it on the court. We need to play at a higher level that we expect from ourselves.”

On Yossiana Pressley’s career milestone
“Spectacular accomplishment for Yossi to be the kill leader at a great program. She’s a part of what’s helped us rise to the top. No-brainer Hall of Famer for Baylor Athletics down the road. Just a special woman who is so much more than a great athlete and volleyball player. For me, I’m excited that I get to be a small part of her history, breaking records at Baylor. She’d be the first to give all the credit to God and to her teammates along the way. It’s been a fun, exciting journey. With the fifth year, it probably will be an unbreakable record. She understands volleyball is a small part of the big picture and she’s no-doubt had a significant impact on our program. Excited for her and this accomplishment. It allows her name to be synonymous with Baylor.”
