Baylor Track & Field: Miller Wins on Texas Relays Day One
Three Bears advanced to Saturday Finals

AUSTIN, Texas - Aaliyah Miller won the women’s 1,500 meters, and three Baylor student-athletes advanced to event finals to highlight day one of the Texas Relays Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Miller, the indoor national champion in the 800 meters, picked up right where she left off by winning the 1,500 meters in her outdoor season debut. The senior from McKinney, Texas, recorded a personal-best time of 4:23.73 to take home the title.

“Aaliyah ran a really good race in the 1,500,” head coach Todd Harbour said. “She hadn’t run a (1,500) in a couple years, so it was nice to see her get one in. She felt pretty good.”

Dillon Bedell was the first Bear of the day to advance to a final as he recorded the sixth-fastest time of the 400 meters first round. The freshman from Lancaster, Texas, ran a personal-best 46.64 to move on to Saturday’s final.

“It was a nice PB by Dillon in the quarter,” Harbour said. “He was pretty excited, and rightfully so.”

In the women’s 200 meters, Kavia Francis ran a personal-best time of 23.28 that was the third-best time of the first round to earn a spot in the finals. Arria Minor (23.53) just missed the final in 10th place, while Mariah Ayers placed 14th (23.67).

“The ladies’ 200 was good,” Harbour said. “Kavia, Arria and Mariah all had a good session.”

Kamden Jackson moved on to the finals of the men’s 200 meters with a time of 21.01.

Destiny Collins, a former Texas athlete, placed third in the 5,000 meters in her Texas Relays homecoming. The Temecula, Calif., native clocked a time of 16:36.59.

Lily Jacobs closed the day with a sixth-place finish in the women’s 10,000 meters, recording a time of 36:13.94.

Alyssa Miller kicked things off in the women’s heptathlon and stands in eighth place through four events (3,159 points).

“It was a good opening day for Alyssa,” Harbour said. “Hopefully, she can finish strong tomorrow.”
