THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – No. 21 Baylor softball went 1-1 on the second day of the Lone Star State Invitational going 1-1 on Saturday. The Lady Bears run-ruled Lamar, 10-0 (5) before dropping a 7-3 contest to UConn.

GAME 1 – BAYLOR 10, LAMAR 0 (5)
The Lady Bears put on a show in their first game of the day as they racked up 10 runs off nine hits. Taylor Ellis led the way for BU at the plate as the senior went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Goose McGlaun went 2-for-2 herself with two RBI.

Nicky Dawson led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk before she stole second and advanced to third off a single by Lou Gilbert. Gilbert stole second to put runners in scoring position with no outs for McGlaun who doubled to left field and scored two.

The following inning, the Baylor offense went off for eight runs off six hits. Ellis got things started with a double and advanced to third off a single by freshman Sydney Collazos, the first of her career. Dawson brought both of them home with a triple to right field, her second of the season and ninth of her career.

Gilbert then walked, and as she went to add an extra base while Lamar wasn’t paying attention, Dawson stole home. McGlaun followed with a single, Aliyah Binford walked, Ana Watson reached on an error and Emily Hott reached on a fielder’s choice before Ellis came back to the plate for the second time in the frame. She singled up the middle to plate two more runs for the Lady Bears.

Maren Judisch picked up her first career start in the circle for Baylor and pitched the entire way, her first complete game. Judisch shut out Lamar while allowing six hits through five innings of work.

GAME 2 – UCONN 7, BAYLOR 3
Baylor threatened late in the game, but the Huskies pulled away for a four-run win in the final game of the day at Getterman Stadium.

Down 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Bears got on the board to cut UConn’s lead in half. Josie Bower doubled to left field, her fourth of the season, and later scored when Ana Watson singled through the right side.

UConn answered with a pair of runs the next inning, but Baylor kept chipping away. In the bottom of the fifth, Dawson scored off a double by McGlaun.

BU had things working in the bottom of the sixth inning when UConn made a pitching change after Bower led off with a single. Maddison Kettler came on to run for the sophomore and scored when Ellis singled through the right side. The Lady Bears had runners in scoring position with two outs when the Huskies went back to their starter in their circle who got an infield pop-up to end the inning.

MOMENT OF THE DAY
Lamar freshman pitcher Hannah Williams’s brother, U.S Army Specialist Seth Williams, has been in the Middle East since May 2020. Hannah, who started in the circle for Lamar against Baylor, did not know her brother was back in Texas until he showed up right behind her after the Lamar starting lineup was introduced.

TOP QUOTES
Baylor head coach Glenn Moore on the day…
“We have some bright spots and dark spots. We are still trying to find ourselves. I said earlier that we might have to take a few on the chin to get where we are capable of, and we are. We simply have to embrace the opportunity to play each day and get better from each experience.”

UP NEXT
The Lady Bears close out the Lone Star State Invitational against No. 25 Mississippi State at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The game has been moved up from its original 11 a.m. start time to try and get ahead of potential inclement weather.
