THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – No. 9 Baylor volleyball was upset by Texas State Thursday evening at the Ferrell Center, 30-28, 15-25, 24-26, 22-25.

BU (19-6) couldn’t overcome its 33 hitting errors, going for a .127 efficiency as the Bobcats (30-8) handed the Bears just their second loss at home in the last two seasons.

The first set featured 11 tie scores, as neither side could find a rhythm offensively early. Callie Williams entered at setter in place of starter Hannah Sedwick midway through and brought the Bears back from a seven-point deficit. A long rally at 20-17 preceded a Baylor double block a point later, and BU eventually knotted the tally at 23-23. As the set wore on, the Bears fought off three set points and turned the tide at 27-26 with a Lauren Harrison service ace. Two Bobcat errors finished the frame with Baylor leading 1-0.

However, set two was all Texas State as the Bobcats led wire-to-wire. BU hit just .061 while Texas State hit .300 en route to a 25-15 set victory. Yossiana Pressley collected five of her 19 kills in the frame, but the rest of the Bears could only muster up an additional four kills as the Bobcats evened the match.

Once again, Williams gave Baylor the spark it was missing when she subbed in to serve late in the third. However, it went for naught as Texas State outlasted the Bears in another set that needed extra points. BU tallied 18 kills in the set, but 13 ties and five lead changes told the story. Sedwick’s service error at 25-24 followed by a Harrison attack error gave the set and a 2-1 match lead to Texas State.

The Bears found something in Cassie Davis, who entered in the fourth set for just her second match of the season. The true freshman recorded five kills on six swings and kept Baylor hanging tough. It wouldn’t be enough as Pressley notched just two kills on 22 attempts and Texas State squeaked past 25-22 BU to pull the upset.

TOP QUOTES
Head coach Ryan McGuyre
On tonight’s match…
“Good job by Texas State, they’ve been good all year. This was a scary match for us to have on back-to-back nights, especially after not playing well but getting the sweep against K-State. I’m disappointed in our execution, we just did not play Baylor volleyball.”
