THE RUNDOWN
NORMAN, Okla. – Baylor women’s golf used a school-record-tying first round of 7-under-par 273 to jump out to a commanding lead at the Schooner Fall Classic on Sunday. The Bears lead the 11-team field by 11 strokes with play suspended due to high winds more than halfway through the second round.



Teams will return to Belmar Golf Course to resume their second rounds on Monday morning, then will continue play into the final round. Baylor (-9) leads a field comprised of all nine Big 12 teams, North Texas and Arkansas State. BU leads North Texas (+2), TCU (+6), Texas Tech (+7), Oklahoma (+8), Kansas State (+9), Oklahoma State (+9), Kansas (+13), Arkansas State (+16), Iowa State (+23) and Texas (+25).



Baylor’s school-record score was made possible by all five players in the lineup shooting even-par 70 or better. Freshman Britta Snyder led the way with a team-high five birdies on her way to a 3-under 67 in her first collegiate round. Returning All-Americans Elodie Chapelet and Gurleen Kaur posted scores of 2-under 68 and 1-under 69, respectively, and redshirt freshman Hannah Karg recorded the final counting score at 1-under 69. Freshman Rosie Belsham made 14 pars on her way to an even-par 70.



The Bears finished 11 holes in the second round and are 2-under as a team in the round. Kaur has made nine pars and two birdies to move to 2-under in the round, while Chapelet is 1-under, Karg is even-par and Snyder is 1-over.



Kaur and Chapelet are tied for second in the 56-player field at 3-under, one shot back of Texas Tech’s Sofia Garcia (-4). Snyder is two shots back of the lead and tied for fifth place at 2-under, and Karg is tied for seventh place at 1-under. Belsham is tied for 43rd place at 7-over, but she’s 1-over outside of one difficult hole.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor currently leads the field in par-3 scoring at 8-under 2.80, eight shots better than any other team.
  *   Baylor’s 28 birdies are four more than any other team.
  *   Kaur and Chapelet are tied for the tournament lead in par-3 scoring at 3-under 2.63, while Karg is tied for fifth at 1-under 2.88.
  *   Snyder leads the tournament with nine birdies and in par-5 scoring at 4-under 4.00.
  *   Chapelet is tied for fifth in the field with six birdies, and Kaur is tied for third in the tournament with 23 pars.

STAT OF THE DAY
273 – Baylor’s 7-under 273 in the first round tied the school record for lowest team score in a round. BU previously carded 273 in the first round of the 2016 Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown and in the third round of the 2014 Schooner Fall Classic. The Bears need to finish the second round at 3-under to break the school record for best 36-hole score, set at 551 in the 2016 Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The program-best 54-hole score is 842 at the 2015 NCAA San Antonio Regional.

“The team has played great so far,” head coach Jay Goble said. “Britta’s first collegiate round was awesome. She played aggressive and with confidence, and it was fun to watch. Gurleen, Elodie and Hannah have been extremely solid, and I look for Rosie to count for us in the third round. We need to stick to one shot at a time tomorrow, as we again expect strong winds.”
