THE RUNDOWN
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Baylor volleyball (0-1) opened its 2020 season with a five-set loss to Kansas on Friday at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena in Lawrence, Kan., 25-19, 13-25, 22-25, 25-19, 9-15.

Three Bears reached double-figures in kills, including: Lauren Harrison (15), Marieke van der Mark (14) and Kara McGhee (12).

BU took the first set behind a .600 hitting percentage and 19 total team kills, with Yossiana Pressley leading the way with six. Baylor led 12-7 after a back-row kill from Harrison and held the lead throughout the set, including after a big block by McGhee that made it 23-18.

The Bears couldn’t find a rhythm in sets two or three, but rebounded nicely in the fourth behind a .607 efficiency and six more kills from Harrison. She put down three of the Bears first five points in the set, leading 5-1, and later added another to make it 9-6. Van der Mark and McGhee collected timely kills to keep the Bears ahead late in the set, and Callie Williams finished it off with a dump at 25-19.

Kansas opened the fifth set on a 4-0 run and the Bears never recovered, ultimately falling to the Jayhawks on their home floor by a six-point deficit.

Defensively, BU recorded eight blocks, including six from junior college transfer Andressa Parise. The Bears also tallied five service aces behind Pressley’s team-leading two, as well as contributions from Shanel Bramschreiber, Jena Kelly and Emily Van Slate.
