THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 3 Baylor volleyball (11-2) dropped a heartbreaker to No. 1-ranked Texas (11-0) in Austin Thursday night, 25-23, 26-24, 23-25, 13-25, 9-15. The Bears were unable to seal the deal after leading the match 2-0.

Senior Yossiana Pressley put down a season-high 29 kills on a .308 clip, redshirt sophomore Lauren Harrison collected 15 kills, and BU used a two-setter tandem in senior Hannah Sedwick and redshirt junior Callie Williams who tallied 28 and 26 assists, respectively.

The Bears got out to a hot start behind Pressley’s monstrous first set in which she smashed 11 kills on 19 swings without an error. A kill from Harrison put BU ahead 8-4, Pressley extended the Bears lead at 17-12, and a solo block by the reigning national player of the year made it 23-19. After a Texas kill pulled the Longhorns within one, an attack error clinched the set in Baylor’s favor.

Set number two was back-and-forth with six lead changes and 16 ties. The two sides traded points all the way until the Bears went on a 3-0 run to make it 15-12. Baylor kept itself ahead throughout the remainder of the set, but Texas wouldn’t go quietly with ties at each point from 20-20 through 24-24. However, it was Pressley once again that gave BU the lead 25-24 and an ace by Shanel Bramschreiber sealed the set with the Bears leading 2-0.

A three-point run early in the third saw the Bears in front 7-3, but the Longhorns battled back to knot the score at 8-8. Neither side would budge until 22-21, when a challenged call reversed the score and put UT ahead late. The two sides were virtually inseparable with nearly identical stat lines in the set, as the Bears hit .308 and the Longhorns hit .306 before entering the fourth.

Baylor stumbled to the tune of a -.071 hitting percentage in the fourth, mustering up only 13 points in the set. Texas ran away to even the match and send the showdown to five. In the fifth, BU remained tough but ran out of gas. A kill from Harrison pulled the Bears within a point at 8-7, but that was as close as they would get, ultimately falling the fifth set to the nation’s top-ranked team.

TOP QUOTES
Head coach Ryan McGuyre
On tonight’s match…
“We came out strong and those first three sets were a battle for us. Yossi [Pressley] looked back like the national player of the year, so it was good to see her dialed in. She made some good defensive moves and some good block moves for us. Defensively, I thought we were making some good stops and wore them down. I did feel like we had opportunities to finish it in three and when you’re on the road, you need to get out of there as soon as you can.”

WHAT'S NEXT
No. 3 Baylor (11-2) and No. 1 Texas (11-0) will run it back at the Erwin Center in Austin for another match on Friday, with first serve set for 7 p.m. CT on Longhorn Network.
