Baylor Men’s Golf Takes Lead at Fighting Illini Invite
Bears were four shots better than rest of field in second round

THE RUNDOWN
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Baylor men’s golf turned in the best round of the day to climb atop the leaderboard at 4-over-par 564 after two rounds at the Fighting Illini Invitational. The Bears entered the day tied for fifth place and shot 1-over 281 in Saturday’s second round at Olympia Fields Country Club, which was four strokes better than any other team in the field.

Baylor (+4) has a one-shot lead over Georgia Tech (+5) entering Sunday’s final round. Pepperdine (+7) is in third place, followed by North Carolina (+13), Illinois (+16), Texas (+17), Texas A&M (+18), Florida (+19), Florida State (+19), Oklahoma State (+20), California (+25), Northwestern (+28), Alabama (+28), UNLV (+32) and Indiana (+41).

Freshman Johnny Keefer bounced back from a 7-over 77 in the first round to shoot a team-best 1-under 69 in Saturday’s second round. He climbed 36 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 37th place at 6-over 146. Cooper Dossey carded even-par 70 to move into sole possession of second place at 2-under 138, one shot back of Oklahoma State’s Austin Eckroat (-3). Dossey has posted four of five rounds at par or better this season.

Travis McInroe and Colin Kober rounded out the Baylor scorecard with matching rounds of 1-over 71. McInroe moved into a tie for 15th place at 2-over 142, while Kober climbed into a tie for ninth place at 1-over 141. Mark Reppe is tied for 44th place at 8-over 148 after shooting his second straight round of 4-over 74.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor ranks second in the 15-team field in par-3 scoring at 2-over 3.05, second in par-5 scoring at 6-under 4.70 and fourth in par-4 scoring at 19-over 4.16.
  *   Baylor’s 26 birdies are tied for second-most in the field, and the Bears rank fifth with 116 pars.
  *   Johnny Keefer is tied for fourth in par-5 scoring at 2-under 4.50.
  *   Cooper Dossey is tied for fifth in par-3 scoring at 1-under 2.88, tied for seventh in par-4 scoring at even-par 4.00 and tied for 16th in par-5 scoring at 1-under 4.75.
  *   Colin Kober and Keefer are tied for 11th in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00.
  *   Kober leads the tournament with 30 pars across 36 holes, including 17 pars in the second round.
  *   Travis McInroe is tied for second in the field with eight birdies over 36 holes.

STAT OF THE DAY
4 – Baylor’s 1-over-par 281 in the second round was four shots better than any other team in the field. Oklahoma State was closest to the Bears with a round of 5-over, while the Bears were at least six shots better than the remaining 13 teams in the field.

WHAT'S NEXT
Sunday’s final round is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. CT. Baylor is in the final group of teams to tee off at 9 a.m., paired with golfers from Georgia Tech and Pepperdine.
