Baylor Baseball: Wendzel Named a Semifinalist for the Dick Howser Award

DALLAS, Texas – National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has released the list of semifinalists for the 2019 Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headware, and junior third baseman Davis Wendzel was one of 26 semifinalists. The award, given to the top player in collegiate baseball, is based on two rounds of national voting.

Wendzel currently leads the Big 12 with a batting average of .385, good for 32nd nationally. His on-base percentage of .500 is also tops in the conference and 19th-best in the country. His slugging percentage of .647 is also good for third in the conference. He has 60 total hits, with 17 doubles and eight homers, second-most on the team. His 17 doubles are also second-most on the team and ranks fourth in the Big 12. The San Clemente, Calif., native also has stolen a team and career-high 11 bases on the season.

As good as the junior has been at the plate, he is possibly even more impressive on the field, only making one error at the hot corner in 40 starts, while making countless run-saving plays for the Bears.

Wendzel is the first Bear to be named a semifinalist for the prestigious honor since Trent Blank and Josh Ludy were also semifinalists in 2012. The only Bear to ever win the Dick Howser Trophy was Jason Jennings, who won the honor in 1999.

This is the 33rd year of the Dick Howser Trophy. The finalists will be announced on Thursday, June 6.  The 2019 award will be presented at TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha, the home of the College World Series for the eighth year. The winner will be unveiled on MLB Network on Friday, June 14, and then, a press conference with the winner will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 10 a.m. (CDT), the opening day of the 2018 CWS.
