THE RUNDOWN
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Baylor women’s golf is in 13th place after shooting 15-over-par 299 in Friday’s first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. BU is just two shots back of the top-10 with two rounds left at Long Cove Club.



No. 36 Baylor (+15) leads Oklahoma State (+17), No. 33 North Carolina (+21) and No. 16 Alabama (+15). Ten of 12 teams ahead of the Bears are higher-ranked. BU trails No. 10 South Carolina (-2), No. 19 Florida State (E), No. 13 Wake Forest (+1), No. 3 Duke (+5), LSU (+6), No. 23 Furman (+7), No. 14 Virginia (+7), No. 11 Auburn (+10), No. 4 UCLA (+11), No. 38 Georgia (+13), No. 7 Vanderbilt (+14) and No. 6 Arkansas (+14).



Gurleen Kaur posted Baylor’s best round on Friday by making 18 consecutive pars to finish the day in a tie for 10th place individually at even-par 71. Maria Vesga recovered from a slow start to make 10 pars and one birdie over her final 11 holes and finish the round at 4-over 75 in a tie for 44th place.



Erica Chiang was 1-over through 13 holes, but she finished at 5-over 76 in a tie for 52nd place, and Diane Baillieux posted Baylor’s final counting score at 6-over 77 in a tie for 67th place. Baillieux was the only Baylor player to make multiple birdies in the first round and was 1-over through 12 holes. Emma Bradley took the turn at 1-over and finished the day tied for 84th place at 10-over 81.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor is tied for second in the 16-team field in par-5 scoring at 1-under 4.93, tied for 10th in par-3 scoring at 5-over 3.25 and 14th in par-4 scoring at 21-over 4.38.
  *   Baylor is tied for seventh in the field with 58 pars and tied for 15th with five birdies.
  *   Baillieux is tied for fourth in the xx-player field in par-5 scoring at 1-under 4.67.
  *   Kaur is tied for 12th in par-4 scoring at even-par 4.00.
  *   Vesga, Baillieux and Kaur are tied for 12th in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00.

STAT OF THE DAY
18 – Gurleen Kaur made par on all 18 holes, recording two more pars than any other golfer in the 90-player field. Kaur entered the tournament with a team-high 202 pars over 306 holes during the 2018-19 season.


WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor is paired with Northwestern and Oklahoma State for Saturday’s second round, which is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. CT with tee times from the first and 10th tees.
