WACO, Texas – Baylor women’s golf sophomore Gurleen Kaur has been selected as a third-team preseason All-American by Golfweek’s Lance Ringler.

Kaur is among 30 players to the Golfweek preseason All-America teams. She’s one of just two players listed from the Big 12 Conference, joining Texas’ Kaitlyn Papp, and she’s one of only eight underclassmen named to one of the three teams.

Kaur, a Houston native, is coming off a strong performance at last month’s 2018 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at The Golf Club of Tennessee. She shot 73-69 to finish tied for 39th in stroke play and earn one of the 64 spots advancing to match play.

In the round of 64, Kaur lost only one of 16 holes on her way to a 3-and-2 win over Oregon’s Amy Matsuoka. Kaur was 1-up through 13 holes, then won Nos. 14 and 16 to advance to a round of 32 match against last year’s No. 15-ranked Division I player, Arkansas’ Dylan Kim.

Kaur dropped Nos. 5 and 6 to fall 2-down against Kim one-third of the way through the match, but she wouldn’t lose another hole the rest of the way. Kaur won Nos. 7 and 9 to take the turn all-square, and after halving the next two holes, she took the lead for good by winning No. 12. The remaining six holes were halved to give Kaur a 1-up victory.

Kaur faced Sweden’s Beatrice Wallin, who is currently ranked No. 30 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), in a round of 16 match. Kaur won the first two holes and led wire-to-wire on her way to a 2-and-1 victory. After Wallin cut Kaur’s lead in half by winning No. 3, Kaur responded with wins on Nos. 4, 6, 8 and 11 to claim a 5-up lead with seven holes left. Wallin won three of the next five holes, but a halve on No. 17 was enough to punch Kaur’s ticket to the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, Kaur faced off against Alabama’s Jiwon Jeon, who is ranked No. 9 in the WAGR. Jeon won the first hole, but Kaur took a 2-up lead by winning Nos. 2, 4 and 5. After Jeon responded with a win on No. 6, Kaur gained one back on No. 9 to take the turn 2-up. Jeon won No. 10, and the duo halved the next seven holes before Jeon forced a playoff by winning No. 18. Kaur fell on the first playoff hole to Jeon, who went on to finish as runner-up.

With her strong summer, Kaur climbed to No. 161 in the WAGR. The sophomore is coming off an All-America freshman season despite enrolling midway through the year after graduating a semester early from Houston’s Cy Woods High School.

Kaur became the fifth All-American in program history when she was tabbed honorable mention by Golfweek. She led the team with a 73.53 stroke average across 19 rounds during the spring semester. Kaur played seven of 19 rounds at par or better and counted 93 percent of her rounds toward the team score. She posted a pair of top-10 finishes and four top-25 finishes out of six tournaments played. Kaur's 73.53 stroke average was the 10th-best single-season mark in program history and the fourth-best by a freshman.

Kaur earned NCAA Championship All-Tournament honors after finishing tied for seventh in a 132-player field at the 2018 NCAA Championship. Her seventh-place finish tied Amy Lee's 2017 result for the second-best NCAA Championship individual result in program history. She helped Baylor finish tied for eighth place at the Championship, which was the program's third top-10 finish in the last four seasons.

Kaur will begin her sophomore season when Baylor opens the 2018-19 season at the Cougar Classic, which will be played Sept. 9-11 at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C. Head coach Jay Goble enters his eighth season leading the program, and he’s joined by first-year assistant coach Carly Ludwig.
