THE RUNDOWN
HOCKLEY, Texas – Baylor men’s golf improved to 2-0 at the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Tournament by defeating Oklahoma, 4-1-1, on Saturday morning at Golf Club of Houston Oaks. With the win, the Bears moved into first place in Pool B.

Baylor has earned six pool-play points with two match wins, and the Bears can clinch a spot in the Sunday afternoon championship match by going 1-0-1 in their final two matches. If Baylor defeats Iowa State on Saturday afternoon and Texas defeats Kansas State, the Bears will clinch their spot in the championship match. BU can also clinch by defeating Kansas State on Sunday morning, regardless of outcome against Iowa State.

The Bears got out to a 2-0 lead in their match against OU after Colin Kober defeated Brad Dalke 4&3 and Cooper Dossey knocked off Garett Reband 3&2. Oklahoma cut the BU lead to 2-1 when Riley Casey notched a 3&2 win over Baylor’s Ryan Grider, but the Bears responded by winning the next two completed matches to clinch the victory. Braden Bailey defeated Quade Cummins 2&1 to assure BU of at least a tie, and Garrett May won his final two holes against Blaine Hale to claim a 1-up victory and secure the Baylor win. Mark Reppe also won his last hole to finish all-square against Logan McAllister and give the Bears the final margin of 4-1-1.

Kober fell behind early against Dalke, trailing 1-down thru five holes, but he brought the match all-square with a win on the sixth hole, and he moved in front for good by winning the eighth hole. Kober also won the 10th hole to go 2-up, and he secured the win by claiming the 14th and 15th holes to go 4-up with three to play.

Dossey lost the first hole against Reband, but he won the third and fourth holes to take a lead that he wouldn’t relinquish. Dossey built the lead to 4-up at the turn by winning the sixth, seventh and ninth holes, and though Reband cut Dossey’s lead to two, he couldn’t get any closer. Dossey punctuated the match with a win on the 16th hole to move to 3-up with two to play.

Bailey led wire-to-wire against Cummins. The first hole was halved, the Bailey won the second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh holes to go 5-up. Cummins reduced the lead to two with five holes to play, but he couldn’t get any closer. Bailey extended to his lead to 3-up by winning the 15th hole, and though Cummins extended the match by winning the 16th, Bailey halved the 17th to secure the win.

May scored the decisive point with his rally to claim a 1-up win over Hale. Hale won the first hole, but May rebounded to win the next two holes to take a 1-up lead. Hale then won the fifth and sixth holes to move back in front 1-up, and he wouldn’t trail again until after the final hole. May was 1-down with two to go and facing a loss if he didn’t at least halve the 17th hole, but he responded by winning the 17th and 18th to claim a 1-up victory in the match.

With the win clinched for the Bears, Reppe finished his match all-square by winning the 18th hole against McAllister. Reppe led for only one hole the entire match, but he never trailed by more than two. McAllister won the first hole and remained in front for seven holes before Reppe won the eighth to bring the match all-square. Reppe took his only lead by winning the 11th hole, but McAllister went back in front by winning the 12th and 14th holes. The next three holes were halved before Reppe won the 18th to finish all-square.

OU’s lone win came when Casey defeated Grider 3&2. Casey jumped out to an early lead by winning the first, third, fifth and sixth holes to go 4-up. Grider fought back with wins on the 10th and 12th holes to cut the deficit to 2-up, but Casey won the 14th to go back 3-up, and Casey clinched by winning the 16th hole to go 3-up with two to play.
