THE RUNDOWN
HOCKLEY, Texas – Baylor men’s golf used a late push to claim a 3-1-2 victory over Texas on Friday’s first day at the inaugural Big 12 Match Play Tournament at Golf Club of Houston Oaks.

With the victory, the Bears earned three pool-play points, which has them one back of the lead despite playing only one match on Friday. Oklahoma, Texas and Iowa State played two matches apiece and have two pool-play matches remaining, while Baylor and Kansas State played only one match and have three chances to earn points across the next two days.

Baylor’s three points trail only Oklahoma (4), which won its first match against Iowa State, 4-1-1, and halved its afternoon match against Kansas State 3-3. BU is tied with Texas (3), which rebounded from its loss to Baylor to defeat Iowa State 3-2-1. K-State (1) is fourth in Pool B, followed by Iowa State (0).

Oklahoma State (6) and Kansas (6) are tied atop Pool A. Texas Tech lost both of its matches, while TCU and West Virginia lost their lone matches on Friday. The top team in each pool after round-robin matches are complete advances to Sunday afternoon’s championship match.

Baylor got its first point of the day when Cooper Dossey took a 3&2 win over Texas’ Steven Chervony. Dossey jumped out to an early 4-up lead through six holes, but Chervony won each of the next four holes to bring the match all-square thru 10. Dossey then won three of the next four holes and halved two more after that to clinch the victory.

The Bears then got half points from both Garrett May and Braden Bailey, who halved their matches against Texas’ Spencer Soosman and Pierson Coody, respectively. Bailey recovered from a 4-down deficit at the turn to three of the next four holes to get back to 1-down. After halving the next three holes, Bailey won the 17th hole of the match to get back to all-square, where the match would finish.

May trailed for only one hole during his match, but his lead never grew larger than 1-up. May took a 1-up lead thru six holes, but Soosman won the next two holes to go 1-up. May then rebounded to win the ninth hole of the match and get back to all-square, and after halving the next five holes, he took a 1-up lead by making a birdie on the 15th hole of the match. Soosman won the final hole to bring the match back all-square.

BU needed one win and one halve to clinch the match at this point. Mark Reppe delivered a win by claiming a 2&1 victory over Drew Jones. Reppe trailed 2-down thru 11 holes, but he won three of the next four to go 1-up with three holes remaining, and after halving the 16th hole of the match, he drained a birdie on the 17th to clinch the win.

Colin Kober delivered the decisive points by winning 1-up in his match against Parker Coody. Kober won three straight holes to jump out to a 3-up lead thru five, but Coody won three of the next four to bring the match all-square at the turn. The duo traded wins over the next six holes and halved the 16th to remain all-square, but Kober won the 17th hole to clinch at least a halve of the match, which was all the Bears needed to secure the victory over Texas. Kober halved the 18th hole to put the exclamation point on his win and give the Bears a 3-1-2 victory.

Texas’ only match win came when Cole Hammer won 1-up against BU’s Ryan Grider. Grider was 2-down thru three holes, but he battled back by halving the next eight holes before winning the 12th hole to cut the deficit to 1-down. The final six holes were halved to give Hammer the 1-up win.
