WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball completed its Opening Weekend sweep of New Mexico State on Sunday with a 7-3 victory at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

The Bears (3-0) racked up 11 hits as a team, led by redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders’ four-hit day, and got five innings of scoreless relief from their bullpen to cap off the series.

Redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for his 14th RBI of the weekend, which ended up being the game-winning run. Junior catcher JJ Kennett added an RBI double and sophomore infielder Cade Dodson padded the lead with a two-run single in the seventh to helped the Bears pull away.

Senior southpaw Stefan Stahl got the win, the third of his career, after throwing 2.1 scoreless frames as the first man out of the bullpen. Redshirt freshman righty Cayden Baker, junior lefty RJ Ruais and junior right-hander Luke DeVasher combined to throw the final 2.2 innings without allowing a baserunner.

THE RUNDOWN
BU jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as Sanders led off the game with a ground-rule double and came around to score on an NMSU throwing error on sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock’s sacrifice bunt. Freshman outfielder Brady Janusek and redshirt freshman outfielder Hunter Snow each added RBIs in the inning to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage in the opening frame.

Senior right-handed pitcher Cade Hansen made his Baylor debut on the bump and worked a 1-2-3 inning in the first and fourth frames, despite getting touched for three runs over his middle two innings of work. Hansen was lifted after four innings on the mound and finished his day with a pair of strikeouts before handing the ball off to Stahl.

In the bottom of the sixth, Armstrong came to the plate with the bases loaded for the fifth time already this year and was hit by a pitch to score what amounted to be the game-winning run, giving Baylor a 4-3 advantage. Kennett added on in the bottom of the seventh by ripping an RBI double into the right-field corner, then Dodson broke things open with a two-run knock that pushed the lead to 7-3.

Baker, Ruais and DeVasher were excellent in the final frames, combining to pitch the last 2.2 innings without allowing a baserunner. DeVasher recorded his first-career strikeout at the Division I level and sealed the sweep for the Bears.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On today’s series-sweeping victory…
“We were in a fight these last two games, it was a battle. We pitched the ball well, up and down the rotation. They threw a lot of strikes and made a lot of plays. We only made one error on the weekend. When you can limit free bases, make the opponent earn everything they get and play good defense, you will be in a lot of games, so that was exciting to see from us. The overall first weekend was big time for us.”

Redshirt Junior INF Travis Sanders
On his team’s Opening Weekend sweep…
“The way we all came together really impressed me, it’s special. We went through a hard fall. In the spring, we came back, played against each other three days a week and haven’t had the chance to play anyone but ourselves. This weekend, coming out here and putting it all together and having each other’s backs one through nine, picking each other up, playing fundamental defense, getting every out, no free bases … it was awesome and so much fun. The amount of fun that we have here with these guys is unbeatable, and I am blessed for that.”

WHAT’S NEXT
