WACO, Texas – Redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong’s historically grand day powered Baylor baseball to a 15-2 victory over New Mexico State in seven innings on Opening Day Friday evening at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

Armstrong hit three grand slams, becoming just the second player in NCAA history to do so in a single game. His three home runs tied a BU program record and his 12 RBIs topped Shea Langeliers’ 11 from 2019 as the new program standard.

Redshirt junior right-hander Lucas Davenport got the start and picked up the win after 4.2 scoreless frames on the bump. He fanned six batters and allowed just two hits and three walks on 75 total pitches.

Junior southpaw Mason Green and sophomore righty Zack Wallace chipped in another four punchouts for BU to reach double-digit strikeouts on the night. Offensively, every Baylor starter reached base at least once and seven different players scored a run, including six who scored two or more times.

THE RUNDOWN
Things were scoreless into the third inning when fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson laced a leadoff triple off the right-field wall and came across to score on an RBI single by sophomore infielder Cade Dodson. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Armstrong came through with his first blast of the night to put the Bears up 5-0 in a hurry.

One inning later, a leadoff single by junior catcher JJ Kennett preceded consecutive hit batters and Armstrong found himself at the plate with the bases juiced again, this time with two outs. On a 1-0 count, Armstrong delivered once more and his second grand slam of the evening lengthened the Baylor lead to 9-0 through four frames.

Despite threatening in the bottom of the fifth, BU was held quiet until the seventh, when the Bears exploded for six runs to enforce the run-rule. Dodson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders took a bases-loaded walk to extend the score to 11-2. Then, it happened for a third time as Armstrong blasted a screaming line drive over the left-field wall for his third grand slam of the night, putting a cherry on top of the 15-2 victory.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Baylor improved to 67-37 all-time on Opening Day and has won seven of its last 11 season openers.
• BU improved to 3-2 all-time against New Mexico State.
• Six players made their Baylor debuts (Dodson, Clements, Armstrong, Janusek, Snow, Wallace), including three freshmen who made their collegiate debuts (Clements, Janusek, Snow).
• Baylor pitchers combined to record 10 strikeouts, marking the 17th time under second-year pitching coach Sean Snedeker to reach double digits in punchouts.
• All nine BU starters reached base at least once.
• Seven different Bears scored at least one run and six different Bears scored two or more times.
• Sophomore INF Cade Dodson drove in two runs and scored twice in his BU debut.
• Redshirt junior INF Travis Sanders extended his on-base streak to six games, dating back to last season.

• Redshirt junior RHP Lucas Davenport collected his first-career Division I win as a starting pitcher, going 4.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
• Sophomore RHP Zack Wallace made his Division I debut with a scoreless inning of relief.

“Well, he’s got power. We knew he had power. He brings experience, he’s such a great kid. He works hard, he’s a good mentor to the young guys, so everything about it’s good. And then to have that day, it’s fantastic. I want him to enjoy the heck out of it tonight and show back up tomorrow and everybody not be disappointed when he hits a single tomorrow. But, it sure was nice to see those three balls jump out of here. It was fun to watch.”

“I think it went well. Definitely a couple things I could improve on, get better for next week, but overall I’ll take it and be happy with it. It was all working today. Changeup, sweeper, fastball were all good today. I’ll just keep working to get better for next week.”

Baylor (1-0) and New Mexico State (0-1) return for game two of the three-game series on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
