WACO, Texas -- Baylor women’s golf finished in second place, three strokes off the lead, and men’s golf finished in 11th place, in the season-opening Folds of Honor Collegiate at the American Dunes Golf Course in Grand Haven, Mich., on Monday-Wednesday.

The women’s golf team had an impressive showing throughout the week, finishing in second place with a three-round total of +10 (292, 289, 293) to finish in second place behind only Texas A&M, who shot a +7 over the three days.

Silje Ohma lead the Bears with a sixth-place finish, shooting a +1 on Monday, a -7 on Tuesday and a +8 on Wednesday. She was joined with top-30 finishes by 12th place Amelia Wan, who shot a +4 on the event, Yurang Li, a transfer from Illinois, who fired a +8 to finish 16th. Malena Castro finished at +9 to place 21st and Bridget Boczar shot a +10 for a 26th place finish.

“I am pleased with the start to the year and I know that we have a great team,” women’s golf head coach Jay Goble said. “There was a lot of great teams at this event and most of them were ranked ahead of us in the preseason polls. We did a great job all week of fighting adversity and that ‘grinding’ mindset will serve us well moving forward. Amelia and Yurang, our newcomers this year, did a fantastic job in their first event for the bears. Yurang shot 71-72 the last two rounds which was clutch, and Amelia birdied the last two holes, a sign of a champion.”

Baylor’s men finished in 11th place, led by an 11th place finish from Alex Heard, who fired a 4-under in the final round to jump 25 spots on Wednesday. Heard had five birdies in his final-round 67, one stroke off the best round of the day. The Bears shot a 291-303-290 to finish 32-over in the tournament.

Jonas Appel finished 40th with a +10 tournament, while Sam Dossey had a 16-over and Martin Kemp finished at 17-over for the three-day event.

The Baylor women will return to action on Sept. 19-21 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn. The men will face the Fighting Illini Invitational in Chicago on Sept. 19-21.
