WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball was shut out by Oklahoma State, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark in Waco as the Cowboys clinched the weekend series victory.

Things were tight for much of the game, as junior left-handed pitcher Ethan Calder settled in after allowing a first-inning two-run home run to put up nothing but zeroes for the next five frames. But the Pokes added two more in the top of the ninth to put the ballgame out of reach, as right-handed starter Mario Pesca shut down the BU offense for eight scoreless innings.

The Bears only mustered four hits on the day, led by senior outfielder Wesley Jordan who extended his on-base streak to six games and logged his 13th multi-hit game of the year. Three double plays and seven left on base, including five in the first two innings, squandered any offensive threat by Baylor on the day.

THE RUNDOWN
A two-run home run off the bat of OSU’s Nolan Schubart started the scoring in the top of the first, but the Bears had a quick opportunity to respond in the bottom half after loading the bases on two free passes around a double by Jordan. However, an inning-ending strikeout kept BU off the scoreboard.

Senior shortstop Tyriq Kemp made a heads up play to keep the Pokes from adding on in the second, cutting down a runner at the plate to end the frame. Baylor once again threatened in the bottom half, getting two runners on thanks to a double by senior catcher Cortlan Castle and a walk to redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca, but once again a strikeout ended the inning.

Meanwhile, Calder began to put together a solid start, allowing just three hits and a walk with five strikeouts through his first four innings of work. In the fifth, he found himself in a jam with two runners in scoring position and only one out, but the southpaw was able to draw weak contact on a soft lineout and a routine groundball to third baseman Pearson Riebock got the Bears out of the inning unscathed.

After one more scoreless frame, senior right-hander Caleb Bunch took the ball from Calder and pitched out of a high-leverage situation after the Cowboys got a runner to third on back-to-back BU errors. Bunch retired the side with a punchout and consecutive ground balls, the first a scorcher to second baseman Travis Sanders that he snared and fired home in time to beat the runner.

At the plate, BU was unable to send more than the minimum to the plate in four of the previous five innings until the eighth, when an OSU error allowed the Bears to get a runner into scoring position. However, Baylor was unable to cash in, and the Cowboys added insurance in the ninth with a solo home run and an unearned run to double the lead at 4-0.

That would be all as Oklahoma State brought on Ryan Ure to retire the BU side in order in the ninth, sealing the series win for the visitors.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On honoring 15 seniors…
“I’m proud of those guys. They have been around for several years, most of them. They’ve done some good things for us and are good kids. They represent this program well, so it was good to get a chance to have a Senior Day. I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to pull out a win for them, so they could leave the ballpark feeling good. I appreciate their parents and their families, and I hope and pray that they appreciate their opportunities to play here at Baylor.”
